The scene opens with a striking young woman, her dark skin and curly hair glistening with sweat as she runs frantically through the streets, a backpack slung over her shoulder, and a blade secured to her thigh. She darts into a corner, taking a moment to catch her breath, when the three men chasing her appear at the junction.
"Check around. She's still here!" one of them commands, his voice harsh and urgent. "Find her!"
Peering through a small hole in the floorboard beneath her, the woman watches her pursuers carefully, her heart racing as she tries to remain undetected.
As she waits, her mind drifts back to a time before all this chaos before she found herself on the run, fighting for her survival. She remembers a life that now seems like a distant memory.
A week before the insanity.
Just a week prior to the onset of this chaos, Alexandera's life had been relatively normal, albeit frustrating and mundane. Like so many others in America, she was struggling with massive debt and a job she loathed, but she kept at it because bills needed to be paid.
The upcoming election only added to her anxiety, as did the prospect of the presidential debate. She could practically feel the collective eye-rolling from her fellow Americans as they, like her, reluctantly tuned in to what promised to be an embarrassment.
But then, in the middle of the debate, something strange happened. The TV screen suddenly changed, as if the universe itself had decided to intervene.
The woman's words were bold and unapologetic, her frustration with the state of the world palpable. Alexandera watched in disbelief as the mysterious woman's speech continued, her message being broadcast worldwide.
"If you're like me, you're sick and tired of this world," the woman said, her voice filled with determination. "And you've been waiting for either God or natural causes to just reset the human race. But apparently, despite all the suffering, injustice, and the incompetence of our so-called leaders, nothing seems to change. So, I'm tired of waiting. It's time for the human race to get reset. Survival of the fittest. If you want happiness, fight for it."
As the woman's speech reached its crescendo, a deafening sonic boom erupted, reverberating around the globe. Alexandera, who found herself in a grocery store at that moment, was thrown off balance by the force of the sound, her ears ringing as she struggled to regain her composure.
Alexandera woke and gasped as she took in the chaos around her. The sky was dark, and the air was thick with smoke, making it hard to breathe. People were screaming, running in all directions as they tried to escape the destruction that was unfolding. She froze for a moment, her mind racing as she tried to make sense of what was happening. But there was no time to think—she had to move.
Without hesitation, Alexandera turned and ran in the opposite direction of the crowds. She knew that her best chance of survival was to put as much distance between herself and the danger as possible. Her heart pounded in her chest as she sprinted through the streets, dodging debris and leaping over obstacles in her path.
The ominous wailing of sirens filled the air, the eerie sound sending chills down Alexandera's spine. Panic set in as she realized what the sirens signified—nuclear missiles were being launched around the world.
The grocery store erupted into chaos as shoppers scrambled to find cover or make a desperate dash for the exit. Alexandera, paralyzed with fear, watched as the once orderly aisles descended into pandemonium.
She couldn't help but wonder if this was it—the end of the world as she knew it. The woman's message, her call for a reset, echoed in Alexandera's mind as the cacophony of sirens and screams surrounded her. Survival of the fittest, the woman had said. But in a world engulfed in nuclear fire, what hope did anyone truly have?
The wooden board creaked ominously, jolting Alexandera out of her flashback. Realizing the immediate danger, she scrambled on her stomach to escape through a small hole, only to be greeted by a chilling laugh from behind.
"At first, I was very confused," the man sneered, "but now that the world's gone tits up, I don't have to give a shit anymore. And right now, I just want to beat the living hell out of you... just because." His eyes glinted with malice, and Alexandera knew she had to fight for her life.
She tried to run, but the man grabbed her hair, slamming her against the wall with such force that the wind was knocked out of her. In a desperate act of self-defense, she threw a handful of sand into his face, momentarily blinding him. Seizing the opportunity, she jumped on him and began stabbing him relentlessly until he drew his last breath.
Without hesitation, Alexandera pulled out her gun and shot the remaining two men who were approaching. She then raced back to her sanctuary—a house she had managed to find amidst the chaos—carrying the supplies she had scrounged up.
The moment she reached the safety of the house, the gravity of what she had just done hit her like a ton of bricks. Her body began to tremble as she sank to the ground and vomited, her stomach churning with revulsion.
A week ago, she couldn't have imagined taking another person's life, but now, in this new world order, all bets were off. Survival meant making difficult choices, even if it meant shedding the remnants of her former self.
As she sat there, trying to come to terms with her actions, she knew that the road ahead would be treacherous. This wasn't just about surviving the physical threats that lurked around every corner—it was about surviving the emotional and psychological toll that this new reality would undoubtedly take.
