The semester holidays arrived at Redwood University, bringing with them a bittersweet mixture of excitement and longing. While Alex was eager to see his family, he also dreaded the separation from Sam. The thought of being away from him, even for a short period, filled him with a sense of reluctance.
"You'll be okay," Sam said, holding Alex close as they stood in front of the dorm. "It's just a few weeks. We'll talk every day."
Alex nodded, his heart heavy. "I know. I'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too," Sam replied, pressing a gentle kiss to Alex's lips. "But it's important for you to see your family. And I'll be right here waiting for you when you get back."
With a final, lingering embrace, Alex reluctantly boarded the train that would take him back to his hometown. As the landscape whizzed by, he found solace in the thought of their nightly chats and the messages that would keep them connected.
Alex's first stop was his grandpa's house. The familiar scent of the old house, mingled with the aroma of freshly baked cookies, greeted him as he walked through the door.
"Alex! It's so good to see you," his grandpa exclaimed, enveloping him in a warm hug. "How's college treating you?"
"It's been great, Grandpa," Alex replied, smiling. "I've made some amazing friends."
They spent the afternoon reminiscing about old times and catching up on the latest news. His grandpa's stories, filled with wisdom and humor, provided a comforting backdrop to their conversations. Alex found himself laughing more than he had in weeks, the familiar surroundings and his grandpa's warmth soothing his homesickness.
That evening, after a hearty dinner, Alex sat on the porch, his phone in hand. He and Sam had promised to chat every night, and he eagerly awaited their call.
The phone buzzed, and Sam's face appeared on the screen. "Hey, you. How's it going?"
"Hey, Sam. It's good to hear your voice," Alex said, his heart lifting at the sight of his boyfriend's smile. "I miss you."
"I miss you too," Sam replied. "How's your grandpa?"
"He's great. We had a wonderful day. He made his famous cookies, and we talked a lot. It was nice."
Sam's smile widened. "Sounds perfect. I wish I could be there with you."
"Me too," Alex said softly. "But we'll make the most of our time apart. And when we see each other again, it'll be even better."
They talked for hours, sharing stories and dreams, until the night grew late and they reluctantly said their goodbyes.
After a few days at his grandpa's house, Alex made his way to the medical college where his twin brother, Daniel, was studying. The campus was bustling with activity, students hurrying to and from classes, the air filled with a sense of purpose.
As Alex walked through the campus, he couldn't help but notice the curious glances and occasional double-takes from students who mistook him for Daniel. The resemblance between the twins was striking, their identical features often causing confusion even among close friends and family.
He finally spotted Daniel outside one of the lecture halls, deep in conversation with a group of fellow medical students. As he approached, Daniel looked up and broke into a wide grin. "Alex!"
"Hey, Daniel," Alex replied, returning the smile. "Surprise!"
Daniel hugged him tightly. "It's so good to see you. I've missed you, bro."
"I've missed you too," Alex said, feeling a rush of affection for his twin. "How's med school treating you?"
"Busy, as always," Daniel replied with a chuckle. "But it's great. Let me introduce you to some friends."
