transplant - j.o
-
Your world had become a haze of hospital rooms, sterile corridors, and the monotonous hum of medical machinery. Kidney failure had woven its tendrils deep into you, stealing your energy and feeling like a mere shell of yourself.
You have been battling kidney failure for the past few years, enduring countless dialysis sessions and waiting desperately for a transplant.
But during the wait, your time was running out. Dialysis wasn't enough anymore. Each passing day you became closer to the grip of death.
Your loyal girlfriend, Jenna, stood by your side through it all. She was a pillar of unwavering support through your darkest days. Jenna had to watch helplessly as your conditioned worsened, feeling the ache of incapability gnaw at her heart with each passing moment. She was going to lose her soul mate. The thought of not having you here crushed her.
That was until she got the call. For months, Jenna carried a heavy burden on her shoulders - a secret that she dared not to share with you. For the last few months, Jenna has been going through a series of tests to see if she could be your match. Then one day, she received it. The call that told her she was a perfect match to donate one of her kidneys to you made her glimmer with hope.
She wanted so badly to share the news with you but she couldn't bring herself to reveal the truth. She feared how you may react, worried that you would feel guilty or indebted to her, or worse, reject the offer altogether. Buried deep within her heart, she kept the secret locked in a vault, even when it seemed like you yourself, were losing hope. It was the most difficult thing she has ever kept from you.
-
Finally. You received the call from your surgeon - an anonymous donor matched with you and is giving their kidney to you. You excitedly shared the news with Jenna. She saw hope flicker in your eyes for the first time in months.
Jenna squealed in excitement for you, grabbing your hand and then pulling you into a hug. Her hug feeling a little tighter this time. When she pulled away, you noticed the reflection of a tear streaming down her face.
Jenna wasted no time and ran upstairs. She spent a few minutes "packing" a hospital bag for you. Little did you know, she already had it packed and ready for a week now.
She hurried back down the stairs and off you were to the hospital.
-
This was the quickest you were ever admitted to the hospital. Jenna was able to stay by your side as they drew more pre-operative lab work and also placed a catheter in your arm. She held your hand the whole time.
"I'm a little nervous," you uttered under your breath to her, but still had a smile on your face.
Jenna's face was beaming, she gave your hand a squeeze. "You're going to do amazing, my love. You've waited a long time for this."
"I know," you nodded with a smile, feeling reassured. "I wonder who my donor is, I wish they weren't anonymous so I could thank them." You let out a quiet sigh, but not from disappointment. You were nervous to go under the knife.
Jenna nodded silently and looked ahead to avoid eye contact. "Yeah..."
The doctor entered the room just on cue with a smile. "Alright, it's time."
Jenna grinned and gave you one last hug. "I love you so much, more than you'll ever know." She gave you a soft, gentle kiss on your forehead. "I'll see you when you get out. Okay?"
"Okay," you nodded once and gave her a half smile before they rolled you away.
Once you were out of sight, nurses helped Jenna get admitted as quickly as possible. Luckily, she already had her blood drawn a few days ago - which she told you was just her yearly lab work.
-
What felt like the blink of an eye which was actually four hours, you awoke in a dimmed lit room. The monitor next to you beeping synchronously with your pulse. Through your blurred vision you made out a shape of a person.
"There you are," the unfamiliar voice spoke. "Your transplant was successful. How are you feeling?" The shape of the person became clear and revealed a nurse dressed in scrubs, she held a clipboard to her chest.
You grunted quietly as you adjusted your position and gave her a gentle but affirming nod. "I feel great. Thank you so much."
You thought about after this recovery - you were free. Other than a few check ups a year to make sure everything was still functioning properly. No more dialysis, feeling weak all the time, not wanting to eat. And now you had more time with the love of your life.
As she crossed your mind you looked back at the nurse. "My girlfriend, Jenna. Can she come in?"
The nurse grinned cheekily, her voice a little higher pitched with excitement. "Oh yes, let me check."
-
While the nurse was gone, you drifted back into a light slumber that was awoken by the nurse walking back into your room. She held the door while another nurse pushed in a wheelchair that sat Jenna.
Jenna's hair was pulled back into a tousled bun. Her face was slightly pale, dappled with her freckles but she was still herself - always smiling. You quickly realized she was wearing the same hospital gown and socks as you.
It wasn't hard to put two and two together. Jenna, this whole time, was your donor.
Your expression quickly changed as warm tears welled in your tired eyes. You used your hands and covered your face to cover your cries.
Jenna was wheeled to your bedside where she took one of your hands from your face and held it in both of your hands, tears now matching yours.
"Would you stop crying?" She said sarcastically with a giggle as a tear fell down her smiling face. "You're going to make me cry." She says as if she's not already crying.
You took your other hand and removed it from your face. You looked over at Jenna, tears streaking down your face but your expression was filled with elation and overwhelming gratitude. "Jenna-" you were at a loss for words. "How- Why?"
"I couldn't lose my girl. Not now, not ever." She gave your hand a squeeze before bringing it to her lips and kissing the top of it.
You attempted to reach towards Jenna to give her a hug until the nurse gently halted you by putting your hand on your shoulder. It was too soon after the procedure to be stretching yourself too far.
"Doctor's orders," the nurse said gently.
"Don't worry," Jenna said in her usual soft spoken voice, one that sounded like what you pictured heaven would sound like. "Now we will have plenty of time to love each other."
You grinned ear to ear at her words, realizing again that the life you know isn't about to end. You will have more time with Jenna. While you were so grateful, you still could not wait to have her back in your arms.
