-- SPECNE, JUNIOR YEAR --
                    --     FLASHBACK    --

"You did this entire page of problems wrong," Leighton giggled, erasing the page aggressively.

"At least one of them must have been right!" I exclaimed defensively, peeking over her shoulder as she wiped off the eraser shavings.

She shook her head with a smirk, plugging an equation into her calculator. "Not one, Maddy. Not a single one."

"You could at least lie and tell me I was close," I joked, leaning back on her pillows.

"But where's the fun in that?"

I rolled my eyes, returning to my task of painting my nails. Leighton had picked out a navy blue color for me, saying it complimented my eyes.

"Are you still going down to The Cape next weekend with Esme and Francesca?" I asked.

Leighton nodded, but she looked sorry about it. "I can't get out of it, Mads."

I huffed a sarcastic sigh, though I was going to miss her. "It's fine."

She was lying down on her stomach, with her legs crossed in the air as she filled in the rest of my homework for me.

"Can we at least get Sweet Green tonight? Or are you going out with Nate?" I asked, painting on the final stroke of blue.

"Nate broke up with me," She replied casually.

"What?" I asked, shooting her a confused look.

"He said I spend too much time with you, and not enough with him," She spoke, her voice lacking emotion as she stared down at my homework. "He said he thinks I'm in love with you."

My face grew flushed, and I let out an awkward giggle. "That's ridiculous! He's ridiculous. Just call him and tell him.. I don't know, tell him it's ridiculous!"

Leighton shook her head, not daring to look up at me. "I can't do that, Mads."

"Why not?" I asked, growing more confused the more she spoke. "Do you want me to call him for you, or something?"

She shook her head again, sitting up and turning to face me without looking up. "Because it's not ridiculous, Maddy," She practically whispered, as we made eye contact for a moment.

"Leighton, I don't know what you mean," I mumbled, rubbing my face.

"Don't make me say it, Maddy, please," She looked up at me with a pleading look, like she might cry at any second. It was the most emotion I'd ever seen her show.

Now it was my turn to shake my head. "Just call him and say you're sorry, and you'll spend more time with him," I offered, placing my hands on top of hers. "I'm sure you can make it right."

"Maddy," She said, as we locked eyes again. This time, though, she closed hers, and leaned over to kiss me.

It all happened so quickly. She leaned over and our lips met. I pulled her closer for a moment, before fully processing what was happening, and pulling myself away. We stared at each other in a horrible silence for a long moment, my lipstick outlining her lips, until we heard a knock at her bedroom door. I grabbed my bag and launched myself out of her window and onto the fire escape.

By the time I got back to my apartment I had 147 missed calls, all of them from her number. I called her back, but hung up the second I heard her voice say my name.
