" You're going to be adopted in a week," Isabella said.
"Oh."
Elowyn did not try to feign any emotions this time.
Instead, it was just an insurprising, inevitable thing.
It was to be expected—her twelfth birthday had passed just a few days ago.
Isabella tilted her head sympathetically.
"Are you going to miss the House?"
Elowyn stayed still.
"I don't know."
Isabella blinked at her nonchalance. Elowyn didn't need to act anymore. She'd done what she needed or wanted to do.
Just one more week, and she would be free.
Elowyn slipped of the chair she was sitting on and left the room.
"Thanks for telling me," she said, looking back at Isabella.

"Everyone, I am pleased to announce that in a week's time, a very nice family will come to adopt our dear Winnie!" Isabella said with a smile.
Elowyn was standing beside Isabella, back with her cheerful facade.
She grinned at Ray, to comfort him.
She wanted him to know that she wasn't distressed. Becayse if the older one was disraught, then what would the younger one do?
On the day of her adoption, Elowyn had one last talk with Ray.
"Ray."
Ray looked up.
"You have to live."
Ray wiped his eyes.
"I don't, I don't know—"
"You promised me Ray," Elowyn said. "You promised that you would travel the world for me."
The two children looked at each other, finally coming to an agreement.

"Hey Mama," Elowyn said to Isabella as they continued walking towards the gate.
On the way there, Elowyn had teased her a bit.
She wanted to let it go, wanted Isabella to know that she knew everything.
"You have to take care of my siblings."
Isabella was silent for a few moments.
"Of course," she said with a tight, well-practiced smile. "It's my job, as their mother."
Elowyn nodded. They were at the gate.
She wrenched out of Isabella's grasp and turned so that she was standing in front of her.
" I don't hate you, Mama."
Silence ensued. Isabella's eyes scrunched up, like she was holding back tears.
Yes, Elowyn had never hated the woman in front of her, who did all that she did for survival. She would have done the very same thing.
