" Happy birthday, Ray, " said the seven-year-old girl.

Elowyn smiled as she carried the small child.

" You're two years old now." She said softly. Ray tugged on her dark locks and hugged her more tightly.

Elowyn hoisted his body higher.

" Elowyn, do you want me to carry him?" Isabella asked. " Is he too heavy?"

Elowyn beamed. " Ray isn't heavy at all!"

Elowyn then whispered to Ray, "Do you still remember what I said to you last year?"

3 Years later

10-year-old Elowyn woke in the middle of the night to hear a screaming Ray.

" Ray!" She exclaimed, hurrying to his bed.

The toddler hugged his blankets and cried.

"The monsters!" He yelled.

"Shhh," Elowyn said softly. She sat on the bed and enveloped him in a hug. "The monsters aren't here right now."

Ray cried and hugged Elowyn tighter. "Winnie it's scary."

" Ray, Winnie?" Said a voice

It was Emma.

Elowyn smiled at her. " Go back to sleep, Emma."

Emma shook her head. " No! What's wrong with Ray?"

" He's having bad dreams, Emma."

Emma ran towards Ray's bed. "Don't worry! Dreams aren't real!"

Elowyn smiled at Ray.

"See Ray? Emma cares so much. Don't worry Ray, you'll be able to escape the monsters."

Ray shivered and scooted closer into Elowyn's embrace.

" Ray, do you know what's my favourite flower?" Elowyn asked one day.

She and Ray were sitting under a tree, and she was helping the latter read a new book.

Ray shook his head, eyes on the book.

" It's sunflowers," Elowyn answered.

She reached in under her shirt at the collar and pulled out a silver chain.

It was a locket.

" See Ray? It has a sunflower engraved on it."

Ray still didn't look up. " Winnie," he said.

" Yes?"
