Melody was exhausted. All day she was running around getting small things ready for the Summer Sun Celebration. She'd picked up tons of colored ribbons for a unicorn named Rarity, arranged a musical piece for some birds to sing, and dropped off what felt like hundreds of baking pans, sheets, and utensils to some orange pony who went by Applejack.
Melody may have lived in Ponyville a year now, but that didn't mean she knew lots of ponies. Melody wasn't one to have lots of friends, she only really had one, a pegasus named Rainbow Dash. Melody had met Rainbow Dash on her first day in town and the two had gotten along pretty well. Other then Rainbow Dash and her family, Melody only knew one other pony: a pink earth pony who loved a great party named Pinkie Pie.
To break her out of her thoughts, a knock came on Melody's door and she sighed, getting up from her comfortable spot on the couch. She opened the door to reveal the very pony she'd just been thinking about, as if her thoughts had summoned her.
"Tell everyone you know!" Pinkie Pie exclaimed, shoving an invitation into Melody's face. "I'll tell them too because I know everyone, everyone, but you can double tell them, just in case they forget!"
Melody watched the pony bounce away and looked at the invitation, frowning. It read:
PARTY FOR NEW PONY AT LIBRARY. I KNOW SHE'S NEW CAUSE I KNOW EVERYPONY AND I'VE NEVER SEEN HER BEFORE! BE THERE SO SHE CAN MAKE NEW FRIENDS! IF YOU'RE NOT THERE ON YOUR OWN, I'LL DRAG YOU MYSELF!!
Melody knew this was true. Pinkie Pie, on multiple occasions, had dragged her to a party before when she failed to show up. Melody growled lightly, rolling her eyes and started playing the piano. Her special talent was music. It's what she loved to do, it's how she'd gotten her cutie mark; a bass clef and upside down treble clef creating a heart with rainbow dots.
She still remembered everything about that day. How scared she'd been to get on stage, how her throat had seized the minute she got up, how she somehow conquered her fear and sang her heart out. A deed which had gotten her a cutie mark... no not a cutie mark, her cutie mark. Her talent. Her destiny. The thing she was to do for the rest of her life. Of course, it wasn't all her, she'd seen the most beautiful thing ever which had helped her get her cutie mark. A sonic rainboom. She wasn't sure where it'd come from or who'd done it because up until that point, she'd thought it a myth. Like the Mare in the Moon, or the Hearth's Warming Eve story. She didn't know, all she knew was that it gave her the courage she needed to sing.
Melody stopped playing the piano and sat on her couch. She thought about how much she really wanted to release a song. A song that she'd written. She was too scared. That's why she'd settled for teaching music. She wrote songs but she never let anybody but her best friends and family listen to it.

As she was drifting off into her thoughts, Melody's front door flew open and her best friend Rainbow Dash crashed into her living room. Melody glared at the sky blue pegasus who smiled sheepishly.
"Hehe. Sorry 'bout that Mels." She flexed her wings. "But we got a party to get to. This new unicorn is in town and she's come all the way from Canterlot because she's checking up on the Summer Sun Celebration preparations!"
Rainbow Dash shoved Melody out the door and Melody sighed, following the pegasus all the way to the library in the center of Ponyville. Pinkie Pie saw them and pulled them through the door.
"Woah!" Melody exclaimed as the pink pony closed the door behind them.
"Quickly!" Pinkie Pie whisper-yelled. "Get into a position, hide behind something!"
