Chapter one.
Everything about it was different to what i was used to, the building itself much smaller, the corridors smaller and a distinct lack of lockers.
This was my new school and it was nothing like i'd though it would be.
I sat on the red leather chair swinging my feet backwards and forwards like a bored child.
my hands clasped together above my lap with my eyes focused on the door.
"Mrs Willis will see you now Aaron" the elderly lady at the reception desk said with a small polite smile.
the small heels of my shoes echoed loudly on the tiled floor as i approached the door.
"Please take a seat Miss Samuels" Mrs Willis, the headmistress, said.
"Now i'm sure you realise this years going to be harder for you than most" she began.
"You're used to an entirely different eduction system and that means you're finishing school two years earlier than you would have done had you stayed in america. theres going to be a lot for you to catch up on and i know myself and all my staff will be more than willing to offer help and support. I've already arranged for all you teachers to have extra sheets and resources for you to take a look at as well as the opportunity for after school tutoring sessions if you feel you require them." Mrs Willis paused for a second to pass me a piece of paper.
"this is your class schedule and a map, but i imagine you wont have too much difficulty finding your way around anyway" she smiled.
"Do you have any questions Aaron?" Mrs Willis asked.
" No nothing i can think of" I answered politely.
"Excellent! Now enjoy the first day of the new school year and don't forget I'm here if you need me" she smiled before getting up and opening the door to show me out of her office.
As i made my way down the stairs i noticed the corridors were now filling up with more and more students, it must be almost time for the first class of the day.
i checked my schedule to see which lesson i had first,it was maths.
maths is my least favourite subject. i just cant seem to get any of it to stick in my head.
according to my map the maths corridor was the first on my right and the class room was 15.
When i entered the room i saw the students looking at the board where a seating plan had been displayed, i quickly found my name and headed to my seat. according to the plan i'd be sat next to a boy called Jacob. Jacob obviously wasn't here yet as the seat beside me was still empty.
i took my seat and pulled off my leather jacket slinging it over the back of my chair.
Once everyone was seated our teacher stood up from his desk ready to address the class.
He was a middle-aged man with a bald head, a beard and glasses.
"Hello everyone i'm Mr Pickering although I'm sure a lot of you already know that, given that i've taught most of you before" he said in a friendly tone.
"Although we do have one new student new to the school, her name is Aaron Samuels and she's just moved from America isn't that right Aaron?" Mr Pickering said giving me a nod.
"Yes, yeah it is" i mumbled as the entire class turned their glance towards me.
was this how every lesson would be at first, everyone drawing attention to me like it was anything other than a normal student.
Soon enough Mr Pickering begins his lesson after handing out new exercise books for all of us.
about fifteen minutes into the lesson which if i'm honest i haven't learnt a thing from the door opens and in walks a boy with messed up blonde hair.
"Ah Jacob you've deiced to join us" Mr Pickering says in a playful tone, perhaps teachers aren't as strict here as I'm used to.
The class laughs and Jacob shrugs his shoulders seemingly un-bothered.
"Your seat is the empty one beside Aaron, she's just moved here from America" Mr Pickering says, seriously is he obsessed with the fact that I'm new or something.
Jacob nods before walking to his seat.
Mr Pickering soon begins his lesson again when Jacob gives me a nudge with his elbow.
"You alright" he mutters quietly. I hadn't realised how nice an english accent can sound and how much more attractive it can make someone seem.
"Yep" i nod.
"Have you got a pen?" he asks.
"first day and you don't even have a pen" I laugh as i pull a spare one out of my bag and handing it to him.
"Thanks babe" he says with a slight smile before turning his attention to the front of the class.
Once Mr Pickering has explained the topic he sets us some questions to complete.
"Do you actually understand any of this?" Jacob asks me as he doodles along the side of his exercise book.
"no not really, i've never really been very good at maths" I shrug.
"me neither, I usually just guess it all" Jacob laughs.
once the lessons over everyone stands up and gathers there things.
"hey do you have anyone to go to lunch with? what with you been new and all" Jacob asks as he pulls his bomber jacket back on.
"Nope" I shake my head as I answer.
"Well me and a bunch of my mates usually go to the pizza takeaway along the road if you fancy joining?" he asks as we make our way towards the door.
"Sure if you don't mind" I smile, honestly i'm just thankful i don't have to eat alone.
"We usually meet at the bike sheds near the gates, I'll see you there then yeah?"
"yeah ok" I nod.
Jacob gives me a smile before turning and walking down the corridor in the opposite direction of where i need to be.
my next lesson was English, I hope the teacher will be a little less dull and annoying and maybe I'll actually understand it this time.
that been said English is probably my favourite lesson, i enjoy the freedom of writing and expressing myself.
As soon as i entered the class room i was greeted by the teacher who stood at the front of the class room.
"Hi there I'm Mr Danvers and you are?" he said with a smile.
Mr Danvers could typically be described as tall, dark and handsome.
"Aaron, Aaron Samuels" I smile back politely.
"Ah yes Aaron you're the new student right?"
I give a simple nod in response.
"lovely, if you need any help or anything don't be afraid to ask. your seats that one there" he says pointing the the third seat back on the middle row.
"Thank you"
Mr Danvers lesson draws me in completely he talks about his love for literature and poetry and asks us what we hope to gain from this year. He speaks of his favourite books, quotes and things he's learnt from the words he's read.
hearing him talk is inspiring and interesting, something the class room can often lack.
when he talks about the things he loves, the things he enjoys you can see it in his eyes that he means every word and hear the excitement and pure joy in his voice.
this is clearly a man who loves what he teaches and teaches what he loves.
His voice is soft and easy to listen to.
the lesson passes far too quickly for my liking and soon enough its time to go for lunch.
"Aaron" Mr danvers calls my name as i head towards the door.
"Yes Mr Danvers?"
"i just wanted to check what level you're on with all of this, like what you've been doing at your old school. i can imagine its somewhat different to how it will be here" he said leaning against his desk with his arms folded.
"How about you pop back for half an hour or so after school today and we'll figure out what you might need to catch up on and i can pull some resources together for you" He suggests.
"that sounds good, thank you Mr Danvers" I smile.
Mrs Willis had mentioned that teachers would offer me extra help and support and i guess she was right.
i made my way outside towards the bike sheds where I was supposed to be meeting Jacob and his friends to go for lunch.
"Hurry up Miss 'merica i don't know about you but we're all starving" Jacob laughs as he slings an arm around my shoulders and leads the way.
