taylor swiftthis night is sparkling, don't you let it go
i'm wonderstruck, blushing all the way home
i'll spend forever wondering if you knew
i was enchanted to meet youthe air thrummed with music and laughter in penacony, the planet of festivity. bright lights twinkled, music played across the street, and laughter echoed from every corner. yet, in a secluded corner overlooking the bustling plaza, aventurine sat alone, a bottle of soulglad cradled in his hand.
he watched the throng of people going here and there with detached amusement, his eyes scanning the crowd. then, they landed on you. your hunched shoulders, your trembling hands—it was a feeling that he was all too familiar. aventurine shook his head and took another chug of his bottle, willing to forget the unpleasant memories.
his gaze then shifted to the man looming over you, an ipc officer. the sight of the man's hand gripping your arm, his voice a venomous hiss, jogged a particularly unpleasant time with aventurine's previous, and deceased, master. it made the stoneheart frown, irritated.
he drained his soulglad, the bottle hitting the table with a sharp clink that echoed through the sudden silence. in a few long strides, he descended the stairs, his eyes never leaving you.
"is there a problem here, friend?" his voice cut through the tension like a blade, easygoing and light.
the officer, startled by the unexpected interruption, turned to face aventurine. recognition dawned on his face, quickly replaced by a veneer of subservience. "mister aventurine, sir, i didn't realize you were here."
aventurine ignored the pleasantries, his gaze fixed on you. "perhaps, you could tell me why you’re making such a fuss and causing our dear friend here distress?"
you met his eyes, cautious. but then you held your breath, for it was the most beautiful pair of eyes you’ve ever seen. it made you wonder why you’ve never seen it before, wondered if there were more that resembled his. he can’t be the only one.
and aventurine’s gaze never left yours, intense and bold, confident and charming, and you find yourself looking away as your cheeks warmed.
stare any more into his eyes and you’d think it’ll haunt your dreams.
the officer sputtered, his voice thick with false bravado. "it's a personal matter, sir. nothing to concern yourself with."
aventurine's lips curled into a smile that didn't reach his eyes, finally moving his gaze away form you to watch the man with thinly veiled amusement. "i beg to differ. when an ipc officer harasses a citizen on a public street, it becomes everyone's concern. you don’t want to antagonize the family now, do you? what will diamond say? you can sell your body and it still won’t be enough."
he stepped closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "now, why don't you tell me what this is really about that you have to drag the ipc’s already murky image to the mud?"
the officer, sensing the shift in power, deflated like a punctured balloon. he mumbled something about unpaid debts and accrued interest, his words laced with the bitterness of a cornered scum.
aventurine listened patiently, his expression a mask of polite disinterest. when the officer had finished his quiet mumblings, aventurine turned to you, his eyes visibly softening. “is this true?"
you shake your head, voice barely a whisper. "i... i paid him everything i owed. but he keeps demanding more."
aventurine's smile returned, this time genuine. "don't worry," he said, his voice soothing—he knows what it’s like to be cornered. “i'll take care of it." he really shouldn’t. this line of job required he throw useless reminiscing, remove any sympathy, or he risks his position, given topaz’ failure to acquire belobog.
yet…traitorous is the heart he thought he’d gotten rid of. aventurine turned back to the officer, his tone now laced with ice. "i suggest you leave. now."
the officer, grateful for aventurine willing to turn a blind eye, scurried away like a frightened rat. aventurine watched him go before turning back to you, extending a hand. "may i offer you a drink? as compensation, of course. a drink and a company."
you hesitated, your heart pounding in your chest after almost losing everything. you barely knew this man, and yet, a spark of intrigue outweighed your caution. you took his hand, your fingers brushing against his. his hand is warm but calloused, telling you a story he’s yet eager to share.
"let's get out of the rain," he said, leading you towards a nearby establishment. not too long, awkward conversations turned to playful banter. a dangerous development for aventurine.
looking at the enigmatic man still gently holding your hand as if you were fragile glass, you thought, you were enchanted. perhaps—squeezing his hand—you can reach out.
