"Sometimes it's easier to pretend that you don't
Care, than to admit it's killing you."

"You can't find me Nate!" Lizzie giggled, her voice muffled but she was close by, I could tell.

"I will find you Liz and then the tickle monster will eat you up!" I say in a deep monster-like voice that had her giggling again, giving up her hiding spot, under the couch.
A wide smile stretched on my lips when her laughter filled the air when I dragged her from under the couch with her feet.

"The tickle monster won!" I laugh like a maniac and she tries to run away but my hold on her tightens and I start tickling her sides.

"How do you always find me!" She pouts. I stop tickling her and pull her on my lap and fix her messy curls.

"You're my baby sister, I'll always find you" I say and kiss her forehead.

"Always?" She asked and her big brown eyes looked into mine, I smiled and pulled her little pinky finger before wrapping my own around hers.

"Always."

Present:

I stood there, my heart heavy. Staring at the empty grave in front of me.
The grass beneath my shoes was damp, and the scent of earth hung in the air. It had been years since I last visited but the memories flooded back as if no time had passed at all. I traced Liz's name etched on the cold stone with my trembling fingers.

"I'm sorry." I whispered, my voice swallowed by the wind."I couldn't find you this time."

I sank to my knees, the wet ground seeping through my sweats. The rain mingled with my tears, blurring the world around me.

"I failed you Liz, I should've been there, I should've fought harder" my voice came out shaky as I rested my head over the wet tombstone, hoping she would hear me, wherever she was.
I don't know for how long I stayed in that position, but the rain had stopped and my legs had gone numb.

Then I saw Micah's figure from the corner of my eye. I don't know how he figured that I would be here or how long he had been standing there for. But I wasn't really surprised. Micah had always been there for me, he was always the one who pulled me from the abyss even when I resisted.
He stepped closer, his boots crunching on the gravel. "Nate," he said, his voice firm yet gentle, as if he was talking to a scarred child.
He crouched beside me, raindrops clinging to his hair. "You know she would never hold you responsible for what happened 10 years ago, nor for anything that is happening now." He spoke, lightly resting his hand over my shoulder.

"But does that change the fact that I indeed was responsible for everything that happened 10 years ago? I couldn't come through for her, I failed to protect her Micah. And now what I did to Anderson has only put Delilah in further danger" I murmured.
