wednesday, june 12 michiganToday was like any other day as a new grad student. I woke up pretty late, remembering I had to run some errands for my new australian cobberdog puppy, Milo. The morning sunlight streamed through the curtains of my tiny Ann Arbor apartment. I dragged myself out of bed, taking a moment to revel in the peacefulness before the chaos of the day set in.
Milo wagged his tail, his brown eyes full of excitement. "Alrighttt, buddy, let's get this day started," I said, giving him a scratch behind the ears. He barked in response, his way of agreeing with what I say, I swear dogs talk when we aren't here.
The drive to target and petsmart was uneventful, the radio playing taylor swift as I pick up everything I need for Milo. It felt strange knowing that in a few days, I would be leaving all of this behind. I had spent four years at the University of Michigan, earning my degree in journalism & english, now I was about to start a new chapter of my life in Indianapolis. The thought was both thrilling and terrifying.
As I made my way back home with Milo and a car full of supplies, my phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number. I hesitated for a moment before picking up, remembering the trillion jobs I had applied to in Indiana. "Um hello?" I answered, balancing the phone between my ear and shoulder while juggling Milo's leash and a bag of dog food.
"Hello, is this Julia McCarthy?" a cheerful voice on the other end asked.
"Yes, this is she?," I replied, still questioning who the person is and how they know my name.
"Julia, this is Rachel Parker calling from The Secret of Us". We received your application and were very impressed with your portfolio. We would love to offer you a position as a junior reporter. If you are still interested?"
My heart dropped in joy. "Yes, absolutely! I would love to join your team," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"great! we can discuss the details and your start date later this week. Welcome to the team. We're excited to have you."
After hanging up, I couldn't help but starting jumping in joy. Milo barked excitedly, sensing my enthusiasm. "We're moving to Indianapolis, Milooo!" I exclaimed, picking him up and twirling around.

I started packing later that day. The boxes that had seemed daunting now felt like a gateway to my future. I carefully wrapped my favorite books, mementos from college, and photos of friends and family. It didn't take me long to pack everything considering I barely had things and most of it was ready to go.

Finally, the day arrived. My car was packed to the brim, and Milo sat in the passenger seat, looking out the window with wide eyes.
The drive to Indianapolis took about six hours with the many stops I took, giving me plenty of time to reflect on what laid ahead. I had always dreamed of being a journalist and sports reporter and the thought of it coming true was crazy.
Indianapolis welcomed us with open arms. The city skyline came into view, a mix of modern buildings and historic architecture. I navigated through the streets, following the directions to my new apartment in a quaint neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.
My new place was a cozy two-bedroom with large windows that let in plenty of light. I could already imagine myself sitting at the small desk by the window, writing articles and sipping coffee. Unpacking was a slow process, but I took my time, arranging everything just the way I liked it. Milo explored every corner, his curiosity leading him on a thorough inspection of our new home.

The next morning, I woke up early, eager to start my first day at Work. Surprising since Im never this happy to do work. I dressed in my best business casual outfit and gave myself a pep talk in the mirror before driving to work.
As I walked into the station, I was greeted by Rachel, the woman who had offered me the job. She was a tall, energetic woman with a warm smile. "Welcome, Julia! We're thrilled to have you here," she said, shaking my hand.
Rachel gave me a tour of the office, introducing me to my new colleagues. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, which helped ease my nerves. My desk was in the middle next to a window where all the journalists were located, and I immediately felt at home. I spent the morning setting up my workspace. Setting up my new laptop and equipment that the office had given me.
After getting settled in for the day, I met the cameraman that would be with me for tomorrow's game, getting to know him more since he is apparently also new to the station. We got assigned the Indiana Fever even though we were originally going to get the Indiana Pacers but Im not complaining women's basketball is more interesting to me.
I was informed that I would be interviewing four players and the head coach before the game. So i've been getting some questions ready as I continue doing research on the team before heading back home to Milo.
