Her pov:I went into my house with Rooh by my side. I could feel his burning gaze on my back.
As I entered, my body released the breath I had been holding. I hadn't even realized I was holding my breath. Only because of his gaze? Hah, so weak you have become, Vaishnavi, my inner voice spoke.
"Diii..?" Rooh's voice in my ear pulled me out of my reverie.
"Hmm," I replied.
"Why are you standing there at the door? Come, let's go in," she said.
"I wish to talk to you, Ruhi," I said.
She tensed. I only called her by her name when I was talking about something serious.
"You know yesterday your parents were killed and..."
"I know, didi, but it doesn't matter to me. You are the one who cared for me when they neglected and tried to abuse me. You were the one who took my slaps and shielded me from their anger. They never treated me like their daughter, but you always did."
I looked into her eyes, seeing a mix of pain and relief. "But still, Ruhi, they were your parents. It's okay to feel something about their death, even if it's complicated."
She shook her head, tears forming but not falling. "I don't feel sad, didi. I feel... free. Is that wrong?"
I pulled her into a hug. "No, Ruhi, it's not wrong. You have every right to feel the way you do. It's been a tough journey, and it's okay to embrace the freedom you're feeling now."
She clung to me, her small body trembling. "Thank you for always being there for me. I don't know what I would have done without you."
"We have each other, Ruhi. That's all that matters," I whispered, holding her tight.
"Okay then, go do your homework for school. In the meantime, I'll get ready for the office, hmm?"Ruhi nodded, wiping her tears away. "Okay, didi. I'll see you later."
I went to my room and started getting ready for the office. Once dressed, I called out, "Rooh, I'm going out. Lock the doors, and I'll come back around lunchtime, okay, baby?""Okay, didi," she replied from her room.
I walked out, the clicking of my heels echoing on the floor. As I entered the office building, my personal assistant greeted me, "Good morning, ma'am."
"Hmm," I replied, acknowledging her with a nod.
"Your schedule for today includes a meeting with the board at 10 AM and a conference call with the new clients at 2 PM," she informed me.
The morning passed in a blur of meetings and paperwork. By lunchtime, I was ready to head home and check on Ruhi.Till now, I hadn't for once thought of him. Why had he proposed to the daughter of the person he killed? I couldn't understand him. He was a mystery.
I was eating with Rooh when the doorbell rang. There he was, disheveled, with messy hair and his suit tie out of order. It looked like he had rushed over here. Not going to lie, he was looking hot, crazily tempting.
I stood up, feeling a mix of emotions. "What are you doing here?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Are you okay?" he replied in his husky voice.
"I am," I said, keeping my answer short.
He sighed, relief washing over his face. "Why? What happened?"
I raised an eyebrow, crossing my arms. "You show up here looking like you’ve been through hell, and you’re asking me what happened?"
He took a step closer, his eyes dark and intense. "I needed to see you. To make sure you're safe."
"Safe from what? You?" I shot back, my voice laced with bitterness.
