Haerin's POV
I stood by my locker, fumbling with the combination lock that seemed determined to keep its secrets. The hallway buzzed with the energy of the first day of high school, but I felt like I was stuck in my own little bubble of frustration. The numbers blurred together as I tried yet again.
"Hey, need some help with that?" a cheerful voice broke through my thoughts.
I looked up to see a girl with a bright smile and a map of the school in her hand. Her confident demeanor contrasted sharply with my nervousness.
"Yeah, please," I replied, a little embarrassed. "This locker just won't open."
She stepped closer, her presence oddly calming. "Sometimes these old lockers need a bit of a jiggle," she said, giving the lock a quick twist. It clicked open effortlessly.
"Wow, thank you!" I exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear. "I've been trying to get it open for the past five minutes."
"No problem at all," she said with a laugh. "I'm Danielle, by the way. New here too?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I'm Haerin. Just moved here over the summer."
"Nice to meet you, Haerin. If you need any help finding your classes, I've got a map," Danielle offered, holding it up. "We can figure it out together."
Relief washed over me. "That would be great. Thank you, Danielle!"
"Anytime!" she said, her smile widening. "Let's conquer this first day together."
As we walked through the hallway, navigating the maze of classrooms and unfamiliar faces, I felt a sense of hope. Maybe high school wouldn't be so bad after all. With a new friend by my side, anything seemed possible.

Danielle's POV
By the time lunchtime rolled around, I was feeling pretty good about the day. Navigating through the morning classes with Haerin by my side made everything a lot easier. She was quiet, but there was something about her that made me want to stick around and get to know her better."Want to grab lunch together?" I asked as we walked out of our last morning class.
"Definitely," Haerin replied, her stomach rumbling audibly. We both laughed.
"Follow me," I said with a wink. "I did a little reconnaissance this morning."
The cafeteria was as chaotic as I remembered from the tour – a sea of students, each trying to stake out their territory. I scanned the room, looking for an open table where we wouldn't feel out of place.
"Over there," I said, pointing to an empty table near the window. "Looks like a good spot."
We settled in, unpacking our lunches. I watched Haerin as she unwrapped her sandwich, her eyes darting around the room. She seemed a bit overwhelmed, but who wouldn't be on the first day at a new school?
"So, Haerin," I said, trying to lighten the mood, "tell me more about yourself. What do you like to do?"
She hesitated for a moment before answering. "Well, I love reading. And I'm really into music. I play the piano."
My eyes lit up. "That's so cool! I've always wanted to learn an instrument, but I'm hopelessly tone-deaf," I joked. "I'm more of a sports person. I play soccer and basketball."
"That's awesome!" Haerin said, her eyes wide with admiration. "I'm terrible at sports. I can't even catch a ball without dropping it."
I laughed. "We'll make a great team then. You handle the music, and I'll handle the sports."
