Goodbyes and Glowing

Lana was in her room, reading her favourite book, Hansel and Gretel, when she first saw a sign. Ignoring it, she walked outside, feeling the need to bask in the burning cold of ice. And she danced, and danced, and danced.

"Lanny?" A voice called, startling Lana dangerously and causing her to form spikes of ice in shock, nearly impaling her mom, who stood 10 feet away from her, an unreadable expression in her face. Lana flinched and sighed "sorry Ma, you scared me" she said in a soft voice "and I received a Flowerground pass last night along with my letter of acceptance into the school for Good and Evil" she smiled "though I certainly don't remember applying to it in the first place" she murmured as she cleared the ice spikes she accidentally made.

Her mum laughed, the sweet soft laugh that always melts Lana's ice, the laugh that sounded like the rippling of waves, the laugh that Lana never got tired of hearing. And she smiled "It's fine Ice Princess, I applied for you and I know you got the Flowerground pass soooo, its okayy. Just wanted to ask you if you're coming in for dinner because I need to go to the lake, really soon".

Lana furrowed her brows slightly at the Lady of the Lake, her mom as she whined "do you really have to go?" She drawled. Her mom sighed and walked up to her, water dripping from every visible inch of her skin as she placed her hands on Lana's shoulder "yes, Princess, sorry but I promised Merlin I'll be there today and I can't let him down can I?"

Lana nodded as she chuckled "get me something on your way back and yeah I'll have dinner and pack up so you can gooo" She got up and started to walk inside, waving at her mom as they exchanged final words.

The Lady of the Lake glided gracefully around in the Lake as she waited for Merlin's arrival, her thoughts racing as she realised that day was the last day she would see Lana in a long long time. She'd heard the stories of the students at the School for Good and Evil and it wasn't always good. She wiped tears that formed in her eyes at the thought and began to brush her ghost white hair when-

"Hello?" She heard distantly, immediately recognizing the voice as Merlin's. She cleared her throat, thoughts and slid up dominantly, a neutral expression on her face as she regarded Merlin with respect.

"I have told you Merlin, I have a daughter and I'd like to get back to her as soon as I can so please, be quick with it" She said, feigning haught. Merlin nodded as he started to speak. "Tonight is the night, when children get to leave to The School and Tedros has gotten accepted into the good one but he needs protection so I just wanted to ask if there's anything you could do to help him because he's still a kid and all" he gabbled, his breaths short and shallow.

The Lady of the Lake noticed this as she smiled warmly at him "Merlin, as long as Tedros has Excalibur, he's always safe. He won't be immortal, but that sword wields more power than you think, so he will be alright, I promise. If anything goes wrong, don't hesitate to come to me immediately. Oh, and Lana also got a Flowerground pass" were her final words as she glided back into the Lake, as she needed to see her daughter at least one last time before she left for The School.

Lana hummed quietly to herself as she packed her bags, icing a lot of stuff as she went along. She didn't want to admit it, but she was nervous; nervous of having to leave her home, her safe space, her mom, to go to some strange school in the middle of nowhere where Fairytales are born. She scoffed loudly to herself as she heard a knock on her door "come in" she said, knowing it was her mom, who had come back from The Lake. "Brr, it is cold" her mom said as she walked into her room, surveying Lana's work "I see you're almost packed up and ready to go!" Her mom said cheerfully but Lana knew there was an edge to her voice that depicted her inner sadness at the thought of letting her go. Afterall, she could read emotions alongside her ice powers. "Yep, I am almost ready. I just need my makeup stuff, hair brush and all that anddd my Sceptre" she said monotonously. Her mom noticed this and hugged her "Don't worry Princess, it will all be alright" she said into the crook of Lana's neck, more to herself than to her.

Lana nodded as she
detached herself from the hug, carefully putting her final necessities into her ice blue travel bag as she smiled at her mom. "I'll leave now" she said softly, walking to the door. "I'll miss you. A lot" she said, her voice cracking on the last word as tears welled up in her eyes and her vision got blurry. Her mom stifled a small sob as she hugged her tightly, wrapping her arms round and round her snow white hair "me too but you don't think I'd let you go to a school looking like you just got up from bed did you?" She asked, lightening the mood. Lana laughed "alright Ma, do your thang" she said as she dropped her bag unceremoniously on the floor. "Skirt and shirt, my style" Lana added. Her mom gave her a thumbs up as she raised both hands the sky, eyes rolling back as she muttered a series of words that Lana couldn't understand. And then the pain.

The excruciatingly blinding pain Lana felt at that moment willed her nothing more than to scream her lungs out, but then as abruptly as it started, it ended. Lana's brows furrowed in confusion as she thought about it, her mom had changed her attire a lot of times so why was it painful now? She opened her mouth to ask but then did a double take as she caught a glimpse of herself in the floor length mirror in her room, her eyes widened. Whoa. Was all she could think of at that moment.

She wore a white off-the-shoulder long sleeved shirt with bluish silver lining at the hems and low neckline, a single frost symbol adorned the front of the shirt, glinting with ice blue glitter. The shirt stopped just above her belly button, revealing her slim waist and toned stomach. Her skirt was ice blue and just a few inches long, with a few pleats and a low waist. She had a pair of white thigh-high socks with blue frost lining at the hem and her shoes were white heeled boots with blue dusting. Her snow white hair was done in a half up half down updo and the top was made into two little pigtails with a few strands of hair framing her well-sculpted face. Light blue glitter dusted her eyelids and her normally long lashes were curled upwards to reveal big sharp blue eyes. Light pink coated her lips and cheekbones and she smiled. She was beautiful.

"Wow" was all she could say over and over again, her own beauty mesmerising her "I know, I did a good job, didn't I?" Her mom said smugly. "Hell yeah" Lana replied, chuckling "Swear jar!" Her mom joked and Lana rolled her eyes as she looked at the mini grandfather clock in her room "I have to go now?" She asked, uncertainly and dazed. Her mom nodded and smiled "Be good or evil for me okay?" She nodded as she dabbed at her eyes "don't wanna smudge my makeup" she muttered quietly, smiling sadly. "Yeah yeah I know" her mom managed to muster in the same tone as the blue and pink portal swirled open in her room, silent sounds emanating from it. "See you, whenever you graduate, and no, you will graduate. Now go" her mom said, pushing her into the portal as she fought impending tears.

Lana shot out of the ground--surprisingly painlessly-- and removed twigs and leaves from her hair as she looked around her at the other girls. They were all dressed nauseatingly in pink. She looked up and saw the building she was dropped in and her mouth fell open. Crystals were everywhere. Pink and blue glass decorated the outside and blended into a light purple. The sunlight shone on the building, enveloping it in a golden glow. And on the other side, a dark school revealed itself , a total opposite of the second school as dark clouds hung ominously over it. Then she saw the sign

Welcome to The School for Good and Evil

Lana could only sigh.
