--- MARYAM SHEIKH ---
I remember my first week at my new middle school went smoothly. The teachers loved me and I had a large new group of friends. And even though Mama playfully reminded I was only twelve, I'd already received three roses on my desk every morning before school. It was all very fun and exciting to me back then.
But that was until he came
Aa a casual observer of every tiny bit of my surroundings, you might get why I was so suprised when I heard this boy was in my class from elementary school.
Yup, thats right! Zaid Khalid had been studying with me ever since we were nine years old and I didn't even know it.
Well I guess noone did.
Maybe it was the way he slept most of the time with his head on the desk or that he ever rarely talked in class. Even the kids who sat next to him didn't know anything about him since he shot a filthy glare at them when they attempted to introduce themselves.
Future You is so proud of you, little Maryam, of how bravely you decided to one day go and talk to the pale faced, thin lipped boy who everyone supposedly called a 'monster'. You walked to him, determined, with a bright red lollipop in your hand but little did you know,
Oh little did you know!
I walked up to him and handed out the lollipop and said, "Here's something to sweeten out you, cold bones!'
I don't blame him for what he did next because what kind of middle schooler says that? He took one look at the lollipop, took it in his hands and crushed it to inches with his heavy boots.
I gave a little nervous chuckle and said, "Not really a bit of a sweet tooth, are you? Its okay, my Baba hates candy but," I added after doing some thinking. "He's a very sweet Baba."
Zaid looked at me as if he couldn't understand a word I was saying. Funny kid, I thought to myself.
For the next few days, even though I tried very much, Zaid still wouldn't talk to me. I ignored him because there wasn't nothing else to do about it. The boy just won't speak!
And that was around the time one of my friends, Celine, started to like Zaid. I was baffled at the thought when she told me because what was there to like about him? He was cold, he was arrogant and he had the most ridiculous buzz cut I ever saw.
One tuesday morning, Celine went up to him and told him her feelings while we were on recess and I just happened to witness it when I came back from my daily trip to the gardens.
"But I really do like you!" Celine kept on saying while Zaid ignored her. I cringed deeply for her because one she was my friend and two, it was a very embarrassing scene. None of them saw me coming in so I took the opportunity to leave before either of them saw me.
But as I reached the classroom door, I heard a small crack. Another crack followed behind the first one.
I turned around and saw Zaid staring at his hands with disgust as he quickly walked out of the classroom.
Behind him I saw Celine screaming with horror as bits of white eggshells sat on top of her headscarf while slimey sticky yolk streamed through her teary face.
