RECAP

     "Clever b#stard..."

Steven looked up, almost offended, but his gaze softened at Herobrine's hesitant smirk.

"You trap me with two impossibles... and force me to take action."

He couldn't lose Steven... not his one creation, his only connection to mercy, kindness and humanity. And... he was in control now, the voice had retreated, hissing and spitting, to the back of his mind.

     Perhaps... Steven was right.

Perhaps he could defeat this stain upon his mind... this darkness that was taking hold. Or... at least keep it in check until they could purge it.

And... if he felt the creature making progress in his mind again, he could always alert Notch to his presence... surely his brother would be strong enough to at least cripple him before he hurt anyone.
     "Very well..."

"...show me what I must do to escape."

     "Steven."

The soldier groaned at the sound of his name, instantly regretting it. His head was pounding, every breath and movement made his body go weak with pain. His head was pressed against rough, hot stone, but he no longer had the strength to lift it.

     "Steven, drink."

     Drink... water?

Something lukewarm touched his lips, and he grimaced, opening his mouth to obey the command. The liquid that filled his mouth wasn't water...it was more like the bitter juice of a bad fruit.

Steven gagged, swallowed, grimaced again, It was liquid, he needed it... so he kept drinking, forcing his dry eyes to blink open.

Herobrine's face was just above his, and he held a glowing... thing up to Steven's mouth, squeezing the juice out as the soldier lapped at it pitifully.

"Wh... happen," he managed, and his voice barely whispered from his dry throat.

     "You collapsed."

     "Oh..."

"You were speaking to me of finding old portals used in mines, then you rambled something about wanting to swim, and you fell over."

Steven scrunched his face up a little, shuddering as the headache rushed over him again. He had no memory of that...

     "D'we know... where t' go?"

"I have some memory of seeing shattered portals as I... as I drank of the Nether species. I only hope the other side is unguarded."

The god still sounded unconvinced, but Steven's declining state certainly filled him with fresh vigor.
