You sat across from Marie, spread out wide across the couch as the woman collected herself mentally and struggled to explain to you why she could not explain anything to you. It was confusing, but also for the most part, exactly what you thought.
"Basically, there are parts of this world that are just... a bit different. People consider the surface level stuff. You got sports and wars and politics and those all happen on the same level. But then there's other levels that influence the ones below and there's not much I can say about that unless you're part of it. Since you don't wanna answer any of my questions or tell me where you're at, I can't tell you where I'm at.""You strong?" You asked forwardly.
Marie grinned. "Yeah, I'm strong. It seems like you both know a lot, but don't know anything. It's weird."
'Why can't we just ask her, now? Seems like we have her. We can use this as the introduction to what we've been looking for.' Fin suggested.
You sighed, throwing your head back. "Knowing what the higher level is about, in your terms, makes you a part of it, doesn't it?"
"Smart. That's right. That's why the terminology you used caught my attention. Knowing makes you a part of the whole thing, but I think you barely got a foot in at the moment. It sounds shitty, like you'd just want to dive right in."
"But, you actually don't. Because there's different rules, right?"
"Heh, yeah." Marie nodded.
"You get it. If a kid like you just dove in you'd get ripped up and torn apart. This world isn't nice. Anything can happen to you and cops wont come. Governments wont care. They don't interfere in the other levels unless they have to. Got it?'"Yeah. So, essentially I need better backers than you, or more power. I should be at least as strong as you before I dip my toes in. Seems like a paradox, though. I gotta be strong to get in, but I can't be strong unless I get in..."
"Weird way to look at it. I think there's plenty of ways to get strong. I can help you out since you're close to Su and-" She blushed, clearing her throat.
"-and because you're really persuasive.."You laughed loudly. "Persuasive, huh? Alright." You extended your hand towards her.
"You teach me. I learn from you. Not a sure thing. I'll come when I want something, only. If you don't like that, speak up.""No no. That's fine. Just be mindful of what Su wants."
You tossed your phone into her lap. "Number."
"Sure." She lowered her head and typed it in. After handing it back she stared at you long and hard.
"You're real smooth, you know that? For such a delicate looking guy. You're like one of those small dogs.""You better explain yourself." You stared at her harshly.
Marie huffed, slumping back in her seat. "I didn't mean it like that. Small dogs just act like they're bigger than they are and you're like that. You don't care how big or strong you are." She leaned forward.
"No offence, Finn, but I could crush you if I wanted to." It sounded like a warning, but it came off to you as her being concerned. You smiled. "No, you can't."
She lifted a brow. "You're not stupid so-"
"You're not stupid either, Marie." You stood up and walked in front of her. You reached over and took her crimson hair in your hand. She cringed as you tilted her head back. You watched her expression. Her indignity, her flushed cheeks.
"Why do people say that like it's true?""You're pushing it, Finn..."
"No... I think I'm moving it within the space I've already taken. You got pushed all the way up here-" You lifted your hand above your head.
"Now anywhere below it is my territory, Marie. This is where I rule and where you listen. I'm very aware of what I can and can not do. Of what I should and should not do." You stared at her intently with a subtle smile and wide, dominant eyes. She opened her mouth. You pulled her hair a bit and interjected before she could speak.
"Sit nicely and be a good girl." She reluctantly straightened her posture.
"Good. Trust my words, listen to my words. There's a reality. You think I'm clever, smart? But I'm weak and small? A small dog?" She nods.
