The night air was split by the shrill cry of tires as the car came to a screeching halt. Eve, caught in the glare of the headlights, stood frozen, a statue of shock and fear. The vehicle, a mere breath away from her, stopped just in time, its bumper almost brushing the fabric of her coat.

For a moment, everything was still, the world holding its breath. Then the driver's door swung open, and a man stepped out, his expression a mix of concern and relief.

"Are you okay?" he called out to Eve, rushing to her side. His voice cut through the fog of her fright, grounding her back to reality.

Eve nodded, her own voice lost in the adrenaline of the moment. "I-I think so," she managed to say, taking a step back from the edge of the street.

"Let's get you out of the road," the man said, gently guiding her to the sidewalk. "That was too close."

Eve's heart was still racing, but the warmth of human concern in the man's eyes was a balm to her rattled nerves. "Thank you," she whispered, the gravity of what could have been not lost on her.

The man gave her a reassuring smile. "Just be careful, okay? The streets can be dangerous at night."

Eve's eyes darted to the alley from which the shadowy figure had emerged, her heart still pounding from the near miss. The street was deserted now, the mysterious presence gone as if it had been nothing more than a trick of the light.

She turned to the stranger, a question in her eyes. "Did you see someone there, in the alley?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The man followed her gaze, squinting into the darkness. "No, I didn't see anyone. Just you," he replied, his tone reassuring yet puzzled.

Eve's breaths came in short, sharp gasps, her chest tight with the cold fingers of anxiety. The stranger, noticing her distress, rubbed her arm for comfort. "Hey, are you sure you're alright?" he asked, his voice laced with genuine concern as he looked at her.

Eve tried to nod, but the motion was jerky, unconvincing. "I-I don't know," she stammered, her eyes wide and darting. "It feels like the world is closing in on me."

The stranger's grip on her arm tightened slightly, a silent promise of support. "Let's get you out of here," he suggested, his tone gentle yet firm. He guided her towards a nearby bench, away from the road.

As they sat down, Eve's breathing began to slow, though her heart still pounded in her chest. She glanced at the stranger, his face a mix of concern and determination. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the noise around them.

He nodded, offering a reassuring smile. "It's okay. Just take your time. We're in no rush." His calm demeanor was a stark contrast to the chaos she felt inside, and for a moment, she allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, everything would be alright.

Eve's eyes darted around nervously, scanning the crowd for any sign of the figure she had seen earlier. Her anxiety spiked again as she half-expected to see that familiar, shadowy silhouette lurking nearby. The stranger noticed her renewed tension and followed her gaze, his brow furrowing in concern.

"Are you looking for someone?" he asked, his voice gentle but probing.

Eve swallowed hard, her throat dry. "There was someone... I thought I saw someone following me," she admitted, her voice trembling.

Eve turned her gaze back to the stranger, her eyes narrowing as she studied his face more closely. There was something familiar about him, something she couldn't quite place. Then, like a bolt of lightning, it hit her. Her breath caught in her throat as recognition dawned.
