Eve's thoughts raced as she considered the possibilities. What if Mark had crossed paths with someone she once knew? What if he had been in the same places, seen the same things? The thought made her uneasy, the sense of safety she had found here feeling more fragile by the moment.

She tried to recall any details from her past that might connect to Mark, but nothing came to mind. Still, the nagging worry persisted. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to his skepticism than mere curiosity.

Eve knew she had to be cautious. She couldn't let her guard down, not until she was sure of Mark's intentions. For now, she would keep a close eye on him, watching for any signs that he might know more than he was letting on. The uncertainty gnawed at her, but she resolved to stay vigilant, protecting herself and the fragile peace she had found in Ricky's home.

Eve was lost in her thoughts when a soft knock on the door pulled her back to the present. She assumed it was Ricky, bringing her the promised tea and toast. "Come in," she called, her voice steady despite the lingering fatigue.

The door creaked open, and to her surprise, it wasn't Ricky who stepped inside. It was Mark. His presence immediately set her on edge, the unsettling look from earlier flashing through her mind.

"Hi, Eve," Mark said, his tone calm but his eyes still carrying that hint of skepticism. "I hope I'm not disturbing you."

Eve forced a small smile, trying to mask her discomfort. "No, it's fine. I just thought you were Ricky."

Mark nodded, stepping further into the room. "He's in the kitchen, getting your tea and toast. I thought I'd check on you in the meantime."

Eve's heart raced as she tried to read his intentions. "Thank you," she replied, her voice polite but guarded. "I'm feeling a bit better, just still a little weak."

Mark's gaze softened slightly, but the intensity remained. "I'm glad to hear that. I just wanted to say that if you ever need anything, or if you feel like talking, I'm here. We all are."

Eve nodded, appreciating the offer but still wary. "Thank you, Mark. I appreciate that."

As Mark stood in the doorway, his eyes locked onto Eve's. His expression was unreadable, a mix of curiosity and something she couldn't quite place. The intensity of his gaze made her feel exposed, as if he was trying to see through her carefully constructed facade.

Eve's heart pounded in her chest, the silence between them stretching uncomfortably. She forced herself to meet his gaze, determined not to show her unease. "Is there something else you needed, Mark?" she asked, her voice steady despite the tension she felt.

Mark didn't immediately respond. Instead, he continued to study her, his eyes searching for something. Finally, he shook his head slightly, as if coming to a decision. "No, that's all," he said, his tone neutral. "Just wanted to make sure you're okay."

Eve nodded, her smile tight. "I'm fine, thank you."

The silence between them grew heavy, almost suffocating. Mark took a step further into the room, his movements deliberate and slow. Eve tensed up, her muscles tightening as she watched him silently, her eyes never leaving his.

Mark's expression remained unreadable, his gaze fixed on her with an intensity that made her feel exposed. The air between them was thick with unspoken questions and unvoiced fears. Eve's heart pounded in her chest, each beat echoing in the quiet room.

She tried to steady her breathing, to project an air of calm despite the turmoil inside. Mark's presence felt intrusive, his scrutiny unsettling. She couldn't shake the feeling that he was searching for something, trying to see beyond the surface.
