A cold wind howled and ice crunched beneath a man's feet. The snow smacked him with what felt like a thousand daggers as he pushed toward a mountain that grew over his head ever steadily. He gritted his teeth as he reached the ice-covered grey wall with numerous ledges dotting the side of the massive structure.
Sucking in a breath, the man stepped forward and knocked on the part of a bare surface. A hollowed knock resounded causing a smile to curl on the man's lips. He leaned close and whispered words inaudible to the untrained ear. The earth trembled as he glanced around searching for unwanted guests. All that greeted his eyes was a vast plain covered in snow.
A hard scraping noise pulled his thoughts and attention back to the door. He watched as a doorway appeared that could easily allow passage to three men abreast and easily two men high. Unfortunately for him, he could fill both spaces halfway, with his broad shoulders and unusually tall height. The door slid shut once he stepped into the chamber, moved the hood of his parka from his head, and let it drop at his shoulders. He sucked in a deep breath and focused his mind on the consciousness of another man further down the tunnel.
Voices grew louder the closer he drew towards him. He closed his eyes and watched as a room came into view with over a hundred people dressed in similar parkas in various colors, had the man trapped within a circle. He felt him cross his arms against his chest as he turned in the direction of the stairs before returning to the mob.
"General, what are we going to do?" Cried a man
"He destroyed my family." A woman cried falling to her knees mourning her loss.
"What does the Captain of the Guard intend to do about the prophecy? Now would be a good time to heed the voices of your citizens instead of ignoring us!" Another voice cried out, his voice laced with anger. The man felt the general take a step back and glance toward the tunnel once more and gave the one who shared his link a look of helplessness. He was only second in command and couldn't make any plans without his leader's permission.
"What do you want me to tell them?" He grumbled through their shared link.
"Nothing," the man at the top of the stairs spat, "I'm coming." With those words, he ended their connection and traveled down a long curved staircase with torchlights to guide his way. He reached the end of the stairs and stepped into the room as before. It had a high arched ceiling with a torch on every wall. Every eye turned toward him as stepped toward his twin brother in the center.
"Captain," a man shouted out from somewhere in the middle of the group as he joined his brother's side, "what are you and the general going to do about the prophecy?" The captain dropped his head and glanced off to the side. No matter how many times he got asked this he still wasn't sure he was doing the right thing. All he knew was that a madman was running about Anderil.
"Rest assured, General Azeal and I are working on a solution." The captain sucked in a deep breath before turning toward the mass and hardening his gaze. "You all know I am a man of war and battle who has shed much blood in my time as captain and soldier to our former King Omega." Pulling his shoulders back he raised his voice so everyone in the cavern as this mountain could hear him no matter where they stood, "I have decided to use my powers to go to the world he came from and end his life as a baby."
Cheers erupted around as his heart sank. To the crowd, it was worth cheering. The man he spoke of, murdered people for fun and turned a vast desert into a tundra. After everything evil, he had accomplished in his life, murdering him would solve the issue altogether. He forced a smile onto his lips. This was his job. He had to do what it took to keep Anderil safe then he would do it no matter the task or cost. His brother clapped a hand against his shoulder pulling him out of his thoughts as he staggered forward.
