I woke up to the relentless pounding of my head and the taste of regret on my tongue. Sunlight streamed through the window, harsh and unforgiving. I slipped on some shorts and a T shirt before leaving my room. Jolyne was already up at the hotel's dining room table, sitting at the small table with a bottle of water as she already tentatively sipped on it and a knowing smirk.
"Morning, sunshine," she teased, taking a sip. "You look like you had fun last night."
I groaned, rubbing my temples. "Yeah, fun. That's one way to put it. Where's Olive?" I tried to piece together the hazy memories of the night before. Dancing, shots, more dancing, more shots, hitting a wall, some puke that wasn't mine, and then... something else. It was all a blur.
Jolyne must have noticed my confusion because she set her coffee down and leaned forward. "She came back late last night. She's out shopping. Though, you were pretty out of it. Do you remember anything about last night?" She teased, a knowing smirk on her face. She knew I didn't remember much. Though that much was obvious.
I looked like shit, hunched over with my hand drawn to my pounding head and squinting eyes glaring at her. Even the morning sun was too much for me right now. "Fuck." I silently cursed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "We got pain meds?" I ask, grabbing my sunglasses and jacket as I struggled it on. I enjoyed how it fit me, it always felt oddly safe.
"Nope, but you are free to head to the convenience store. I don't know if you noticed but it's literally across the street." Jolyne hummed, grabbing one of her coils as she played with it. I always admired her hair and how it nice it always looked. Her hair always bounced back to tight curls that she wore like a halo.
I nodded, barely mustering the energy to respond, and headed out the door. I followed the hallway down to the elevator that chimed way too happily. Though, I knew it was the alcohol that had caused this. I grunted at the noise as it chimed four times before hitting the bottom level, opening it's doors to the large lobby.
If it wasn't for Olive's career in hospitality, I'm sure we wouldn't have earned such a delightful place in the heart of the city. The afternoon air was a filled with a cool crisp breeze fluttering despite the summer humidity. Though, the breeze today was a godsend from the heat that had came before yesterday. I crossed the street to the convenience store, hoping for some quick relief from my hangover.
The bell above the door chimed softly as I entered, and I silently cursed that one just as much as the elevator's annoying chime, the cold conditioned air inside a welcome change as I stepped inside. I made my way through the aisles before finding the pain medication, I grabbed a bottle or two, knowing this wouldn't be my last time drinking in this trip. Then I headed to the refrigerated section, scanning the shelves for an iced coffee, something to scrape me off the ground. I scanned it before landing on one. Triple caffeine? Sign me the fuck up.
As I reached for a bottle, my hand brushed against another that I had lacked the focus to notice was also reaching inside. I had accidently touched it when I felt the hand instantly pull back with a slight gasp, and I looked up to see who the noise belonged to.
