Before being able to employ tactics involving firearms use against zombies or hostile survivors, it is important to understand firearm safety as it reduces the risk of negligant discharge which can injure/kill you or an ally, and give away your position to nearby zombies or hostile surviors.
Some basic firearm safety rules are as follows
1. When picking up a firearm, always know the condition of it
ex: is there a round in the chamber? Is it on safe or semiautiomatic? (If applicable) Is there a loaded magazine in it?
2. Keep your finger off the until ready to fire and know don't point the barrel at anything you're not willing to destroy. Avoid flagging (accidently point gun at things/people you are not willing to destroy). Also keep barrel pointed in safe direction when carrying it.
3. Know what is behind your target, bullets can overpenatrate through or miss and hit something behind your intended targetWhile there are more safety rules, these are just the general rules.
Things to ask before bringing a firearm into battle against zombies The following are important questions that if able to be answered can prove compentency with a weapon
Do I know how to reload and safely unload this weapon without firing it?
Do I know how to fire this weapon?
Do I know how to clear common jams and other failures with this weapon?
Do I know how to field strip (take it apart and put it back together) and clean this weapon?
Does this weapon have a selector switch or safeties? If so how do engage/disengage each safety and know what each selection means?
Am I aware of the types of ammo that can be safely fire from this weapon?
(If applicable)
Do I know how to zero weapon's sights?
Do I know how to remove or add attachments to and from picanny rails or the end of the gun? Such as lasers, grips, sights, bayonets, silencers, etc
Do I know to adjust or change the stock of this weapon?
(For precise and exact use over long range),
Do I know how to adjust the sights or scope (zeroing for long range)? Scopes are either in Mills or MOA (minute of angle)
Do I have the knowledge or tools to be able to tell bullet displacement due to wind or rain?
How to use grenades and other throwable utilities
- when pulling the pull pin, pull it with a twisting motion and Do Not use your teeth
Fragmentation Grenades - Before throwing you should either be a safe distance away from your target or able to hide behind a good cover (ex a concrete wall or able to duck down in a trench) Guage the distance between where you are aiming and your positon. Hold the grenade, pull out the pull pin with your other hand (please don't use your teeth, you will hurt yourself). Then you will say "Frag Out" (lets allies know you threw a frag grenade). Then throw it in an arc trajectory and take cover or do suppressive fire (depends on distance from grenade). Upon letting go of the grenade the arming spoon will pop out, whcih starts the burn timer. Other things to note
- Make sure your allies are aware you are throwing a grenade and that they will not be impacted by the blast
- Unless you are a proffessional, do not try to "cook" the grenade, a process in which you hold a grenade as you wait for the timer to burn out before throwing. Greande timers can sometimes be imprecise and you do not want to risk your life and the lives of your allies on factory quality control.
- A frag grenade kills through shrapnel. Modern grenades are actually built like a coiled wire, while older ones have a pineapple like fragmentation.
Smoke Grenades
- Use to provide concealment or disorient enemy. Note: do not use against the undead as it plays in their advantage
- can also be used to mark an area for allies ex: extraction or an rendezvous/assualt point
Same usage as frag grenade, but say "smoke out" and wait for there to be enough smoke before advancing if using as cover.
Flashbangs
- Uses a very bright flash of light and a loud noise to disorient inexperienced enemies. It is more effective in the dark and especially indoors. There are very little to no cases where a flash grenade has been recorded in use against zombies.
- it has a much shorter timer then other grenades, do not try to cook it! It will go off on you and can severely burn your hand.
Pull the pull pin and throw it into a room
What if a grenade is thrown at you
If a grenade or grenade like object is thrown at you, you will shout "grenade" which alerts your teammates of the danger. Then if immediate cover is not nearby to get behind, you wil run three steps away from the grenade and fall flat and put your hands over the back of your head. This is the best chance you have of surviving a grenade.
If you are lucky it is just a smoke, flashbang or the grenade was a dud.
Some potential options if you want to try and be a hero are to jump on the grenade and cover it with your body to protect your squad or try and kick it away in a safe directions.
