The next morning, I woke to find the other side of the bed cold and empty. I let out a heavy sigh, a mix of disappointment and resignation settling over me as I turned to face the window. The room was quiet, too quiet, reflecting Xiao's recent silence. Though his reticence weighed on my mind, I resolved not to let it dampen my spirits. After all, Xiao knew how to reach me if he felt the need to discuss anything.
Pushing the thoughts aside, I slid out from under the covers and reached for a fresh towel, determined to start the day on a positive note. Just as I was about to head into the bathroom, my phone buzzed with an incoming message. Curious, I paused and checked the screen—it was a message from San.
As I paused to read San's message, a small smile tugged at my lips. His text was thoughtful and inviting: "Good morning! Hope you slept well. Would you like to meet for coffee this morning?" The offer was tempting, a gentle nudge into the day with the promise of good company.
Considering the offer, I glanced back at the empty bed, the imprint of Xiao's presence still visible on the pillow. The contrast between Xiao's recent withdrawal and San's straightforward warmth was stark. With a sigh, I decided that a morning out might be what I needed to clear my head.
I quickly typed a response to San, feeling a mix of excitement and relief at the diversion. "Good morning! Coffee sounds great. How about the little café by the downtown park at 10?"
"Perfect," came San's swift reply. "I'll see you there. Looking forward to it!"
With plans set, I headed to the shower, the warm water cascading down, easing the tightness in my muscles and clearing my mind. As I dressed, a part of me was eager for the meet-up, craving the friendly banter and uncomplicated warmth that San often brought into our interactions.
Before leaving, I checked my reflection in the mirror, adjusting my shirt and smoothing down my hair. My phone buzzed again with another message from San, increasing my anticipation: "I'm already looking forward to our chat. See you soon!"
I couldn't help but smile back at the screen. "See you soon!" I texted back, my spirits lifted.
Grabbing my keys and wallet, I left the apartment with a sense of purpose. The fresh morning air felt invigorating as I made my way down the street, thoughts of coffee and friendly conversation propelling me forward.
As I approached the café, I saw San standing outside, his posture relaxed, a bright smile greeting me. "Hey! You made it," he said warmly as I approached.
