"You know, I'm worried... I'm not sure this is the best idea," whispered a woman's voice, holding a small sleeping child in her arms.
The twenty-one-year-old woman looked around, concerned about the possible return of the most evil wizard of all time, who had been defeated only temporarily by the boy in her arms. He had a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead, a mark left by the merciless curse that was supposed to end his life.
She turned her gaze to another woman of the same age, a brunette with nearly black eyes, holding a little girl. Near her neck was a mark that resembled a crown pierced by a lightning bolt, also received that night. The two children had tried to protect each other and, in the end, had survived.
"Cath, are you sure this will work?"
"We are sure, you mean."
A deep male voice interrupted the worried woman suddenly, looking towards the almost destroyed house of the Potters. No one was safe; the Death Eaters could come after Harry, their child, and Lyra, the well-behaved little girl sleeping in Catherine Evans' arms, at any moment.
"We have no other solution. We've tried to find any other way, and this is the safest."
Their plan now was simple. They would separate the two children, who had grown up together until now, to ensure both would be safe. Harry would be taken to Petunia, Catherine's half-sister and Lily's biological sister, while Lyra would be raised by her mother, away from the Wizarding World until it was time for her to return.
Of course, there was a risk it could be overturned by a certain old headmaster, but they were prepared to take that risk. They would take any risk and modify the next steps for the sake of the world. For their own good and that of the little ones.
"I still don't understand why you don't want to take Harry with you, Wings," said another man, dark-haired and just as worried as the woman before.
"Lyra and Harry must be separated for their own good. The power within her is too great, and Harry has his own special something. Think about it, they could cause more harm if they don't learn to control themselves alone."
"But... but Lyra is only half-vampire! Shouldn't she have only... only half of what you have?"
And that is true. Catherine is currently the Vampire Queen, the most powerful creature known on earth... but her powers have increased, as have her daughter's, who seems to inherit more or less than she had. The vampire woman doesn't understand this either, she doesn't know how it's possible, but she's aware that her daughter can become a danger just like her.
That's why she decided that, for the moment, the boy should stay safely with her sister, even if she doesn't like it. Until she figures out what's going on with her daughter, she risks creating an uncontrollable storm. She takes a deep breath, turning her head to the second man with them, both nodding in agreement.
"She should, but we're not sure either. The prophecies made have their role, not to mention my predictions. I know Lyra and Harry will be an explosive combination if we don't anticipate this. And we are."
The dark-haired man and the woman holding the Queen's nephew nod, then both sigh. This is no time for games; they must be very careful about what they will do next. The cards are dealt; it depends on how they will be played.
"What's the next step?" asked the dark-haired man, taking the little one in his arms.
"I will go back inside, sit next to James and Lily's bodies, and 'sleep' with the two children in my arms. Hagrid will come and take Harry to Petunia, I will follow them and continue the act."
"And then?"
"Then I will wait for the rest of the tragic events to unfold and fake my death. I will take Lyra and raise her at one of my parents' properties to avoid being found. I hope to gather enough information before Dumbledore comes and asks me to teach at Hogwarts."
"And if there isn't enough time?"
"Then we will do it without him realizing what's happening. I want Tom's defeat, as well as Dumbledore's downfall for the peace of our souls. When the time comes, I will tell the two children their true fate and save them."
"Or they will save us."
"Or we will save each other," said the dark-haired man, continuing to look around. "Dumbledore has played us all along and has done nothing to stop all this. We will just make him think he has won."
Cath swallowed hard. Their plan was risky, it could fail at any moment... but they were doing everything in their power to prevent that vision she had over a year ago. She had seen destruction and lost lives, many tears, and screams of pain. Even now, she struggled to stay standing after hours of enduring the Death Eaters' torture to save her friends from their greatest enemy.
She couldn't help but feel guilt creeping into her soul. Without realizing it, she had made a huge mistake, and if she didn't complete this plan, she would die along with those involved. It was already too late to change events somehow; there would be too ugly consequences if the timeline was disrupted. They wouldn't risk that aspect. The brunette kissed her daughter on the forehead, then took her nephew in her arms, doing the same.
"I hope that in the future, when you learn about all this, you won't hate us too much or... or at least let us explain...," Cath whispered through parted lips.
She felt the warmth of lips on her forehead before heading towards the house where her sister and brother-in-law had died, trying to save two innocent little lives. She hoped their plan would be carried out as it should.
However, what she didn't know was that life is so unpredictable and that a greater evil was lurking in the shadows. No one is safe anymore.
