The Library

My alarm blasted in my ear and it was Squidward Nose. Harold must have gotten into my phone last time he came over. Him and the whole rest of the Total Drama Brothers really want me to make sure they're never in my life again.

I took a speed shower and got dressed as quickly as possible. When I got downstairs I was so afraid I would be late on my first day that I skipped breakfast entirely and ran over to McDonald's to get some food for my lunch break.

As I walked past the apartment I had my eye one, I spotted someone carrying a box out of a large moving truck with much difficulty. He looked like a few more steps with the box would make him genuinely pass out from exhaustion for an hour. I then noticed it was Noah.

He must have moved in here then. I tried to gather the courage to say hello, but I went to work instead because I need money to actively be alive.

I got to work only about thirty seconds late so I considered this a win. The library was clean, looked amazing, was organized into very neat sections and smelt amazing. It was hard to really place, but it mostly reminded me of chocolate.

After putting my stuff in the back and checking in, I started work. I didn't have much do really. I stocked some books, familiarized myself with the setup, and tried to help some people find the books they wanted.

Eventually one of my new co-workers tapped my shoulder. His name card read Rune and I knew I would probably never talk to him again.

"Hey, Cody right?" He asked. I nodded and he continued on. "Okay so I need to run off because my friend just texted me and some car drove onto the sidewalk, almost killed him. Yeah he needs me to drive him to the hospital because he thinks he broke his arm and the car demolished his bike. So just work the counter for me while i'm gone! That okay with you?"

The guy ran out of the door before I could respond so I just took his place at the reception. The library was pretty slow today, but it was a Tuesday so it made some sense. I turned away to pick some trash off of the floor and turned back to see Noah walking in! Cool.

He was aggressively typing something on his phone and wasn't looking up, so I took the chance to pretend I wasn't there and prank him I guess. Noah stopped at the desk still laser focused on his phone yet started talking to me.

"Uh Hi, sorry i'm just here to get a library card. I'm new in town and I just need to drop by and get one."

I smiled and started doing a very annoying high pitched voice that sounded like an awful mix of Betty Boop and Shermy from Adventure Time.

"Oh yes sir it's a pleasure to meet you," I spoke, "and yes I can definitely get that for you!" I could see Noah cover his mouth as if to not make a remark on the voice, but he let go and shrugged.

Noah shut off his phone yet smiled and kept his eyes shut. "Cody, I know that's you I saw you while I was walking in." I let out a quiet groan and shrugged. "Well, worth a shot! Anyways I'll get you a card."

Noah looked at me and I swore I saw his smile grow. "Yeah thanks. Well I'm going to go browse for something to read then. Uh, do I have to give you anything or-" "Just your name, phone number and email. I know what those are though so I can have you done here in just a minute."

He nodded and shuffled off to whatever section he wanted to go to, while I filled out his card and got to printing it for him. Once done I sat down and glanced around the Library again. It was pretty nice, the walls were sort of this pearl color and the ground was just this navy blue carpeting. It wasn't really big, only about 60 by 50 feet or less.

So I had a feeling not many people even use it, but it was really peaceful and I felt pretty calm. Noah came back and placed some romance type novel on the counter. Quickly I scanned the book and pulled up his card, then pushed the book back to him. I held his card, leaned over the counter, and gently placed the card in his hands.

Noah chuckled, picked up his book and shoved the card into his wallet. "Well, see you another time Cody." As he turned away, I have no idea what I was thinking but I tapped his shoulder and stopped him. He looked back so I gathered my courage, took a breath and asked him.

"Hey, so I saw you moved into that apartment near here. Is it okay if I crash with you for a while? It's closer to my job and uh, I really need to get out of my parents house. I can pay rent and whatnot too so would that be okay?"

Noah was silent for a hot second, but shrugged. "Yeah sure." Wait, really?" He nodded again. "Yeah. I actually need help with some of the rent while I get a new job and I hate to say it, but I need at least one person to talk to once in a while."

"Oh..okay then! Uh I can be in there by Thursday next week." He nodded again. "Sounds good. See you Cody." And he walked away. What.
