My head hurt my back stuck and my knees and hands by throbbing. I looked around me taking in my surroundings it took my eyes a while to get used to the dark. I was surrounded by other children ranging from 8 to at most 16.
I heard the crying murmur in the sniffles.
" where are we," A small boy asked to the right of me. I looked over he was looking at me his eyes are puffy and swollen he was probably 9 or 10.
" I don't know," I replied.
He Scooted next to me laying his head on my shoulder. It was somewhat comforting. I started to hear him sniffle and I wrap my arms around him.
" I miss my mommy," he muttered trying to fight back the tears.
A tear ran down my cheek. I squeezed him tighter." I do too."
He was just a kid. Mom always told me that kids were supposed to be protected no matter what, and to comfort them when they are sad.
A older girls scooted toward us.
I looked up." how old are you?" she said in a quickie voice.
"13 and you,"
" I just turned 15," she looked scared and then.
"Do you know where we are,"I asked.
"I think growlow, maybe." She replied.
"But I'm from Crawford how is that possible this is miles away from their."
"We're on train," she replied.
I didn't even notice that we were moving I started to listen pushing the noises in the box car out. The humm and grinding of train tracks rung in my ears.
" trains move fast," we both looked down at the little boys sitting in my lap and clinging to me. "I'm from loosen."
That's even further away.
"Yea," The older girls said.
"I'm Sarah Grolen," she looked at me then the boy.
"I'm Matt Pitter," he said in his squeaky voice.
They both looked at me.
" Piper Lawson," I croaked.
Matt quickly fell asleep in my lap as I cradled him. Sarah and I continued to talk about anything to get our minds off the situation. She told me how she had lived on a farm in Bexa with her mom and brother how her dad died from lung cancer, and how her mother went to find a cure and never came back. How her older brother Tim had been forced to fight in the war, and then how she was found in their neighbors house and put in the box car with the rest of us.
I looked down at matt soundly asleep on my lap. I was afraid he would stop breathing from all that happened, and how he had been here for a longer time than I had.
" Poor things been through a lot," Sarah said sadly.
" yeah,"I replied kissing matt on the top of his head.
" i'm starving when are we going to get out of here?" Sarah sounded defeated, and looked down at her bare feet.
I put my hand on her shoulder. She looked up at me her eyes filling with tears. She scooted to my left side and leaned her head on my shoulder. I wrapped my arms around her and gave a tight squeeze. She eventually fell asleep with the humming of the train and the gentle swaying. It was much quieter now.
My eyes shifted to the other sleeping kids and a few that were awake. I looked at my bloody feet. They stung but most of the pain was gone now. Thankfully the cuts weren't too deep so it was very unlikely for them to get infected. I felt my eyelids started to get heavy, but I begged them to stay awake. I had too many questions I was afraid if we all fell asleep something bad would happen. But my eyes had betrayed me and I laid their lip with two sleeping kids on me they steady breaths like a lullaby.
In my dream I saw my mother standing in the doorway of our small house I saw our neighbor Mr. Nathan his wife Mrs. Diane, and their little girl Martha. Martha was three years younger than me and she always felt like my own little sister. Actually red locks always looked as if she lived with a bird nest on the top of her head. I imagine the times when she would sit on the upside down paddleboard and I would brush out her hair. I remember how cute she was like after running around the whole town trying to find me when she did her frekaled cheeks Were always so red and pink.
Oh, how I wish that sweet girl was still alive.
