ོ༘₊⁺☀︎₊⁺⋆.˚"IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY here at the wave pool. A few of our young hopefuls getting their last practice waves in before the State Finals get underway..." A commentator says over the loudspeaker, his voice echoing around the urban surf arena. He continues, talking about some of the competition, but I'm too busy sneaking around, trying not to get caught that I don't listen.
Out on the generated waves, several surfers are already ripping, but there's only one I recognise that I care to pay attention to.
The familiar mass of blonde curls are pulled back and she's crushing it. I watch her ride up and down smooth faces like she's been doing it all her life– probably because she has. The one, the only, Brodie Gibson.
Watching her come off the water, I tamper the urge to scream at her. It's just a little bit longer until I can put my plan into motion. Behind me, the men behind the announcer's table are fumbling around looking scrambled for the list of names I now hold in my hand.
Step two.
Step one was convincing Ma to fly down here. Currently, she's in the car sending work-related emails. Step two was technically supposed to be surprising the Gibsons at home and then going to surprise everyone else at state tryouts, but I had to tweak my plans when the date changed last minute.
So here I am. Watching one of the announcers scamper off to find the missing list of names. I look back to Brodie– she places her board down, exchanging it for a pair of headphones. I know what comes after this.
She starts walking off again, heading my way where I'm half-hidden behind a tent and some random surfboards. The headphones go on and I already know the music starts, but she doesn't get more than a few feet before she's intercepted by a tall pink-haired guy who stops her dead in her tracks by ripping the headphones from her head.
