The van hurtled down the winding road, the danger ahead unseen by its passengers. I scanned the surroundings, my heart pounding with fear and determination. I had to act, and fast.
As the van approached a blind curve, another car emerged from the opposite direction, speeding towards a catastrophic collision. In that critical moment, I felt the crimson string binding me to the girl cool, as if in response to my whispered prayers. For a fleeting instant, the divine allowed me to intervene. For once, I was allowed to act.
The strings' hold loosened, and I found myself free from its tormenting grip. Without hesitation, I slipped through the walls of the van, my ethereal form allowing me to pass through solid matter. I ran to the front of the vehicle, positioning myself directly in its path. Although I was invisible to the human eye, my form materialized just enough to be seen, my wings still concealed.
The brother, eyes wide with shock and confusion, slammed on the brakes the moment he saw me appear in front of them. Tires screeched, and the van skidded to a halt mere inches from the impending collision. The sudden stop jolted the family, their panicked breaths filling the tense silence that followed.
I stood there, panting slightly, the adrenaline of the moment coursing through me. I had revealed myself to the world, an action that could have severe repercussions, but I had no other choice. The girl's fate had demanded her death, yet I couldn't let her family perish alongside her.
Inside the van, her brother's confusion turned to astonishment as he stared at the figure who had seemingly appeared from nowhere. The family was safe, the immediate danger averted. Relief washed over me, mingling with their disbelief.
"What just happened, Beomgyu?" the father murmured, his voice trembling with shock.
"I... I don't know," the brother replied, his eyes still fixed on me. "He came out from no where."
My heart pounded as I took a step back, the reality of my actions sinking in. The crimson string might have cooled, but its presence still lingered, a reminder of the fate I couldn't completely escape. I had intervened this time, but the girl's destiny remained unchanged.
As Beomgyu emerged from the van, confusion etched deeply on his face, he approached me cautiously. I, the angel, with icy blue hair and clothes that seemed to emit a faint glow, stood uncertainly, unsure of how to explain my inexplicable presence. Beomgyu's first question cut through the tense silence: "Who are you?"
I hesitated briefly, then replied softly with my real name, Taehyun, a name seldom spoken among mortals or angels alike.
"Why did you step in front of the car?" Beomgyu's voice was steady, but laced with bewilderment. I wrestled with my response. I couldn't reveal the truth—that I was an angel bound by celestial laws. Yet, lying wasn't an option either. I remained silent, grappling with the weight of my secrets.
Suddenly, as if the universe itself intervened, the engine of the van exploded with a deafening roar. The hatch burst open, thick smoke billowing out into the night air. Panic ensued as the family members scrambled to evacuate the vehicle, fear etched on their faces.
In a surge of adrenaline, I dashed forward, my instincts overriding my doubts. Ignoring the searing pain of the crimson string, I scooped the still-sleeping girl into my arms, lifting her gently as if she were weightless. My wings, still invisible, unfurled, a protective shield against the chaos unfolding around them.
Amidst the chaos, I carried her to safety, away from the burning vehicle. I laid her down carefully on the pavement, checking her over to ensure she was unharmed. Guilt gnawed at me; I had sworn to ensure her fate, yet here I was, once again shielding her from harm.
