If someone would have told me a year ago that I'd be attending my senior Prom with Onyx Hayes, I would have laughed if their face.
As I watched my mother fix the tie he'd lazily thrown on thirty minutes ago, I couldn't help but stare. He was breathtaking. Even in all his irritable, snide remark glory, I knew everyone would stop and admire the sight of him, even if only for a second. He was dressed in a royal blue suit that brought out the different hues in his eyes. Since he'd dropped a good fifteen pounds in the last four months, it'd been hard to find a suit that didn't foot loosely around the abdomen and tightly around his broad shoulders and biceps. I'd bought an off the shoulder blue dress that fell just below my knees. It hugged my curves in all the right places, and the second I'd tried it on, Angie wouldn't relent until I had it purchased.
"You look so handsome." my mom cooed as she touched both hands to her chest, falling back a few steps as she stared at Onyx. "Look at you."
"Stop." he groaned, throwing his head back. With his hair gelled, it wasn't an untamable mess and I smiled when his eyes found mine with an irritated glare. "You find this amusing?"
"Yes." I didn't hesitate to answer-or cross the room. "I also think you look incredible, Sir Sleeps A Lot."
He tried to fight it, but the corners of his mouth twitched at the nickname. "Sir Sleeps A Lot?"
"Seemed fitting six months ago." I responded, leaning into his side. "All you did was sleep and parade around with your arrogant attitude."
He extended an arm and I fell under it. "I still sleep a lot."
"Only proving my point."
"I never denied it."
He reached out to brush a strand of my dark hair from my eyes and allowed the smile to fully form. "You look beautiful, Sky."
"I know." I rocked back and forth. "We should hurry this up, though. If we stay too long, Mom is going to have some long speech that's going to make us cry and I'll smear my makeup. Plus, I know Mikey will be mad if they arrive before we do. He wanted a group picture."
Onyx laughed quietly. The sound was solemnly heard as of late and made me smile ear to ear.
"I love you guys." Mom said quietly in the doorframe after pictures. "Have the time of your life. I know this isn't how this was supposed to go, but she'd love for the two of you to have the best night."
I leaned in to hug my mom, but Onyx hesitated in her arms, as if he were accepting not only a hug from my mother, but his too.

Onyx lasted far longer on the dance floor than I'd predicted, but ultimately spent the last hour or so sitting at our table sipping on punch and watching my friends and me dance. By the time I veered away from the lot and to him, he was watching me intently, blue eyes lit with amusement.
"You having a good night, Princess?"
I smiled. "I was. Until you decided to sit down."
"I'm tired." He stretched his arms behind his head. "Sir Sleeps A Lot needs his beauty sleep, ya know?"
I laughed. "I missed this."
"Huh?"
"Your smile." I whispered. "Your laugh. I hated the sound for so long, cringed every time I heard it. But the last few months it managed to get under my skin and weasel its way into my heart, and when it stopped, I missed it."
He huffed out a sigh. "I'd ask why every word that leaves your mouth sounds like a passage out of a romance novel, but I have a pretty good idea why."
"What can I say?" I joked, leaning over the chair and draping my arms over his shoulders. "I was born with the narrative in my blood."
"You're insufferable sometimes, Sky. You know that, right?"
I looked down at him. "Touche, Nyx."
There was a few minutes of silence before I felt every inch of Onyx grow tense. I wasn't in any mood to let someone ruin our night, unfortunately Ty had no care for what we wanted or needed tonight.
"Ooh, Wells." Nyx said with an emotionless laugh. "I am in no state of mind to deal with your right now. If you were smart, you'd turn around and walk away."
Ty, dressed in all black with a violet tie, held both hands up in surrender. "I don't want to cause any problems, bro. I just wanted to talk to Aurora."
"Unfortunate for you, because I'm not allowing you anywhere near my girlfriend." Onyx snarled through his teeth, standing with his palms flat against the red linen table cloth. "The last time I did that, she was left with a black eye."
Ty looked as though he wanted to explain what'd happened from his side, but decided against it, and slowly turned his full attention to me. "Can we talk?"
Given that we were in a public place and it'd been months since our altercation, I shot Onyx a look. "I'll be fine, Nyx."
He opened his mouth to protest, but I followed Ty a few feet away. We were still close enough where Onyx could intervene if necessary, but far enough that the music and loud chatter would stop him from eavesdropping.
"You look beautiful." Ty breathed quietly.
"Thanks."
He rubbed a hand across the back of his neck. "Look, Rory, I don't remember a lot about what happened. Erica. . . her mother checked her into a mental intuition a few days ago and she's. . . she's pressing charges for what happened. I just. . . I'm not asking for forgiveness, but I needed to apologize for everything. You never deserved anything that happened, accident or not."
"Okay."
"I'm sorry, Aurora, seriously." he threw a look Nyx's way, shifting uncomfortably when he saw the look my boyfriend was sending him. "I'm glad you and Onyx are together. You guys deserve one another. I put him through a lot. I put you through a lot. I'll never be able to take back what was done, but I can learn from it."
I nodded. "Thank you, Ty."
He started to back away, and just as I joined Onyx at the table again, he met Ty's eyes and my ex boyfriend said, "I'm sorry, Nyx, man, about your mom. I know it's been a few months and its late, but its better late than never."
Surprised, Nyx just started at him until Ty grew uneasy and walked away.
"What'd he say to you?" Onyx asked as I sat down. "You okay?"
"Yeah." I mumbled. "He just apologized for everything. Turning over a new leaf, maybe?"
He nodded. "Sure."
I rested my head against his shoulder, watching as Levi and Mikey danced with Angie occasionally stealing one of them away. Eventually, Onyx kissed my temple and whispered, "If he's capable of change, then I am too."
