After the last bell rang, Jeff met up with Max and Sarah by their lockers. The school day had finally come to an end, and Jeff was eager to head home.
"I'll catch you guys later," Jeff said, shouldering his backpack.
"You sure you don't want to hang out for a bit?" Max asked, glancing at Sarah, who nodded in agreement.
Jeff shook his head. "I've got to meet Liu and head home. Maybe tomorrow?"
Max grinned. "Alright, mate. Tomorrow it is."
Sarah smiled warmly. "Take care, Jeff. See you tomorrow."
Jeff waved goodbye and made his way to the front of the school, where Liu was waiting. His younger brother looked up from his phone and smiled when he saw Jeff approaching.
"Hey, Jeff! Ready to go?"
"Yeah, let's get out of here," Jeff replied, ruffling Liu's hair playfully.
As they walked home, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the sidewalks. Jeff felt a sense of relief to be away from school, but that relief was short-lived. They turned down a quiet street, and Jeff noticed a group of familiar figures standing by the corner. Randy, Keith, and Troy.
Jeff's heart sank. "Liu, stay close," he whispered, his voice tense.
The bullies sauntered over, smirking. Randy stepped forward, blocking their path. "Well, well, if it isn't the new kid and his little brother."
"Leave us alone, Randy," Jeff said, trying to keep his voice steady.
Randy chuckled, looking at his friends. "You hear that, guys? He thinks he can tell us what to do."
Keith and Troy laughed, moving to flank Jeff and Liu. Jeff glanced around, searching for an escape route, but they were surrounded.
"Look, we don't want any trouble," Jeff said, trying to sound calm. "Just let us go."
Randy's expression hardened. "You embarrassed us, new kid. Nobody makes a fool out of me and gets away with it."
Before Jeff could react, Randy lunged at him, throwing a punch that caught Jeff in the jaw. Jeff stumbled back, the world spinning. Liu cried out, trying to move forward, but Keith grabbed him, holding him back.
"Jeff!" Liu shouted, struggling against Keith's grip.
Jeff's vision blurred as Randy and Troy continued their assault. Punches and kicks rained down on him, and he fought to stay on his feet, but the pain was overwhelming. He managed to land a few hits, but it wasn't enough.
"Stop it! Leave him alone!" Liu screamed, tears streaming down his face.
Randy sneered, delivering a final, brutal kick to Jeff's ribs, sending him crashing to the ground. "Let that be a lesson, new kid. Watch your back."
Keith released Liu, and the bullies walked away, laughing. Liu rushed to Jeff's side, his face pale with fear.
"Jeff! Jeff, are you okay?" Liu asked, his voice trembling.
Jeff groaned, struggling to sit up. Every part of his body ached, but he forced a reassuring smile for Liu's sake. "I'm... I'm okay, Liu."
Liu helped Jeff to his feet, supporting him as they slowly made their way home. The pain was excruciating, but Jeff's mind was racing with thoughts of revenge. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.
As they reached their house, Jeff's resolve hardened. He wouldn't let Randy and his goons get away with this. They had crossed a line, and Jeff was determined to make them pay.
The next day at school, Jeff's anger simmered just beneath the surface. He couldn't focus on his classes, the humiliation and pain from the previous day gnawing at him. By lunchtime, his fury reached a boiling point.
As he walked into the cafeteria, he spotted Randy and his gang sitting at their usual table, laughing and joking without a care in the world. Jeff's vision tunneled, and he felt a surge of blind anger.
Without thinking, he marched across the cafeteria, his fists clenched at his sides. Max and Sarah, sitting at a nearby table, noticed him and called out, but Jeff didn't hear them.
"Randy!" Jeff shouted, his voice cutting through the cafeteria's din.
Randy looked up, smirking when he saw Jeff. "What do you want, loser?"
Jeff didn't respond. He just swung his fist, catching Randy square in the jaw. The force of the punch knocked Randy off his chair, and the cafeteria fell silent.
For a moment, no one moved. Then Randy scrambled to his feet, rage blazing in his eyes. "You're gonna pay for that, Woods."
The two boys clashed, fists flying. Jeff fought with a desperate fury, but Randy and his friends quickly overpowered him. They shoved Jeff to the ground, kicking him as the other students watched in shock.
Max and Sarah rushed forward, pulling Randy and his gang away from Jeff. "Stop it! Leave him alone!" Sarah shouted.
Max helped Jeff to his feet, his face a mix of anger and concern. "What were you thinking, mate?"
Jeff looked at Randy, who was being restrained by some teachers who had finally intervened. "I just... I couldn't take it anymore," Jeff muttered, his voice filled with regret.
The principal arrived, demanding explanations from everyone involved. Jeff, Randy, and the others were escorted to the office, the rest of the students whispering and speculating.
Sitting in the principal's office, Jeff felt a crushing weight of regret. He hadn't thought his actions through, and now he was facing the consequences. His parents were called, and they arrived shortly after, their faces a mix of worry and disappointment.
"Jeff, what happened?" Margaret asked, her voice trembling.
Jeff looked down, unable to meet her eyes. "I'm sorry, Mom. I just... I couldn't take it anymore."
Peter sighed heavily. "We'll deal with this at home. Right now, we need to figure out how to move forward."
Jeff sat there quietly, numb to the discussion currently held between the principal, Jeff's, and Randy's parents. He could start to feel himself spiraling emotionally, going deeper and deeper into his guilt.
