The principal's office was silent, save for the ticking of the wall clock. Jeff sat with his head down, his mind racing with the events that had unfolded. He could hear his parents talking in hushed tones with the principal, but the words seemed distant and muffled.
After what felt like an eternity, the principal cleared his throat. "Jeff, we understand that you were provoked, but violence is never the answer. You and Randy will both face disciplinary action. We're suspending both of you for a week. I hope you use this time to reflect on your actions."
Jeff nodded numbly, barely registering the words. His father placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "Let's go, Jeff."
As they left the school, Jeff caught a glimpse of Randy being led out by his own parents. Their eyes met briefly, and Jeff saw nothing but hatred in Randy's glare. It sent a shiver down his spine.
The week of suspension was tense. Jeff's parents were disappointed, but they tried to be supportive. Liu, however, was a different story. He looked up to Jeff and had been shaken by the fight and the aftermath.
One evening, as they sat in their room, Liu turned to Jeff, his face serious. "Jeff, are you really okay?"
Jeff sighed. "I'm fine, Liu. Just... trying to figure things out."
"I heard Randy's been talking about getting back at you," Liu said, worry etched on his face.
Jeff clenched his fists. "Let him try. I'm not scared of him."
Liu's concern for Jeff grew each day. He knew Randy and his gang were dangerous, and he couldn't stand the thought of them hurting his brother again. One night, he made a decision that would change everything.
Liu sneaked out of the house and headed to a local convenience store. He had heard rumors that Randy and his gang hung out there. Sure enough, he found them loitering by the entrance, laughing and joking as if they owned the place.
Taking a deep breath, Liu walked up to them. "Hey, Randy."
Randy turned, surprised to see Liu. "Well, if it isn't the little brother. What do you want?"
"I want you to leave Jeff alone," Liu said, his voice steady.
Randy laughed. "Or what? You gonna make us?"
Liu's heart pounded, but he stood his ground. "Just stay away from him."
Randy's smile faded. "You've got guts, kid. I'll give you that. But you're making a big mistake."
Before Liu could react, Randy grabbed him by the collar. "You think you can threaten us?"
In a desperate attempt to defend himself, Liu swung at Randy, but he was quickly overpowered by Randy and his gang. The commotion attracted the attention of a passerby who called the police. By the time the officers arrived, the fight was over, and Liu was on the ground, battered and bruised.
The police separated the boys and took statements. Given Liu's age and the severity of the situation, he was taken into custody for instigating the fight.
Jeff was woken up in the middle of the night by a frantic phone call from the police station. His parents rushed out, leaving Jeff alone with his thoughts, panic and dread filling his mind. Hours later, his parents returned, looking exhausted and defeated.
"Liu's been arrested," his father said quietly. "He's being charged with assault and will be sent to juvenile detention."
Jeff felt like the ground had been pulled out from under him. "What? No, this can't be happening."
His mother's eyes were filled with tears. "I'm so sorry, Jeff. He was trying to protect you."
The following days were a blur of court hearings and legal proceedings. Liu was sentenced to a year in juvenile detention. Jeff was devastated and filled with guilt. He couldn't shake the feeling that it was all his fault.
