(A side story based off my RnM crossover fanfics)
Sideswipe honked his horn as he spotted Rainbow standing by the main high school exit. This daily ritual had become a comforting routine for both of them. As her guardian, Sideswipe took his duty to watch over her seriously, at least most of the time. He ensured her safety and well-being, monitoring her wherever she went. While she spent most of her day in class, he often utilized that time to patrol or complete assigned missions. This way, his schedule was clear in the afternoon, allowing him to spend quality time with her. When Rainbow saw him, she sprinted towards the sleek vehicle and hopped inside. She closed the door with a soft thud and slumped against the driver's seat, her energy noticeably diminished. Sideswipe's rearview mirror angled to focus on her, "What's up, speedster? How did it-" he paused, his concern immediate, "Hey, you okay?" he asked with worry. For the first time, she had her hoodie up, obscuring half of her face. Despite this, he could sense her sadness.
"I'm fine, just— tired." she replied, her tone lacking its usual vigor and almost uncertain.
"Long day, huh?" he probed gently.
"Yeah, you can say so." she murmured.
Sideswipe knew something was off. Rainbow was usually full of energy and excitement, but today, she seemed weighed down by something. Thinking it was probably exhaustion, he decided to lighten the mood with some casual conversation, "I feel ya." he began, attempting to inject some fun into the atmosphere, "Today's mission was a total bummer." he turned on his engine, the car humming to life as he started to drive towards her home.
As they moved through the familiar streets, he continued talking, hoping to ease her mind, "I almost dozed off again from one of Strongarm's typical boring lectures about 'following the regulations'." Sideswipe snorted, exaggerating his mimicry of the cadet's stern voice.
Rainbow managed a small smile at his antics, a faint glimmer of her usual spirit, "Hm." she responded, still sounding distant but more engaged than before.
"So, what about you?" he asked, steering the chat back to her.
"It was... alright." she replied, "Long and boring classes, lots of homework, soccer training. You know, the usual."
"Jeez, really? That sure sounds lame." the red mech said, "Well, we just have to make the rest of the day more exciting. How about a race? Or we can grab some takeout and watch a movie or something? No, wait! We still have to finish that horror game! Uh, what was it called— Five Nights at... Fred's? Fredrick's?"
