The day had been long and filled with unease, but I knew I couldn't back out now. Lady Stormwood had been insistent about meeting in Thornwood, and I needed to know what she had planned for me.
I left the academy just as the sun was setting, the sky painted in hues of orange and purple. The walk to Thornwood was eerie, the path overgrown and barely visible in the fading light. The village loomed ahead, its abandoned houses standing like silent sentinels, watching my approach.
As I neared the village, I heard a rustling behind me. Turning quickly, I saw nothing but shadows. My heart pounded in my chest, and I quickened my pace, eager to find Lady Stormwood and get this over with.
Finally, I reached the old stone bridge where we were supposed to meet. Lady Stormwood was already there, her figure barely visible in the dim light. She turned as I approached, her eyes glinting with a mixture of excitement and something darker.
"Karyna," she said, her voice smooth and commanding. "I'm glad you came."
I nodded, trying to mask my apprehension. "What do you need me to do?"
Lady Stormwood smiled, a cold, calculated smile that sent chills down my spine. "We are going to unlock the full potential of your relic. Tonight, you will see just how powerful you can become."
Lady Stormwood's words hung heavy in the air, her eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin prickle. She motioned for me to follow her, and we walked deeper into the heart of Thornwood, the abandoned village eerily silent around us.
"Do you know the history of this place?" Lady Stormwood asked, her voice barely above a whisper, yet it seemed to echo off the crumbling walls.
I shook my head. "Not much. Just that it's been abandoned for a long time."
She nodded, her gaze distant. "Thornwood was once home to a community of people who possessed relics, much like yours. These relics were powerful, imbued with ancient magic. The villagers used their abilities to protect and nurture the land of Astoria."
We reached the center of the village, where a large stone circle lay, its surface etched with intricate runes that glowed faintly in the twilight.
"But as time went on," Lady Stormwood continued, "fear and jealousy grew among those who did not possess relics. The villagers of Thornwood were seen as a threat, their power misunderstood and feared. Eventually, they were hunted down and killed, their relics lost to time."
Her words sent a chill down my spine. I could almost hear the echoes of those long-gone souls, their magic lingering in the air. "So why bring me here?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
Lady Stormwood turned to face me, her expression grave. "There is a legend, Karyna, that one day a bearer of a lost relic would rise and possess the power to save Astoria. I believe that you are that person."
The weight of her words settled over me like a heavy cloak. "Save Astoria from what?" I asked, struggling to comprehend the enormity of what she was saying.
"From darkness and chaos," she replied. "The balance of our world is fragile, and there are forces that seek to disrupt it. With the power of your relic fully unlocked, you can restore that balance."
I looked down at my arm, where the relic was embedded. Its once-bright glow was faint, as if it were waiting for this moment. "But how do we unlock it?" I asked, my heart pounding with a mix of fear and anticipation.
Lady Stormwood gestured to the stone circle. "Stand in the center and focus on your relic. Channel all your emotions, your fears, your hopes into it. The magic of this place will do the rest."
