I woke to the soft sound of rain tapping against the window. Blinking, I realized I was on a couch, a warm blanket covering me. I sat up slowly, the events of the previous night flooding back. The journals, the drawings, Lady Stormwood's dark secrets... and then Alexander, carefully placing me here.
I looked around the room and saw Alexander asleep in a chair, his head resting against the back, looking surprisingly uncomfortable. A soft smile touched my lips as I watched him. He had stayed with me, even when he could have gone to his bed.
Carefully, I got up and moved to his side. Gently, I placed a hand on his shoulder. "Alex," I whispered. "You should sleep in your bed."
He stirred, blinking his eyes open and looking at me. "Karyna? You're awake. How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay," I said softly. "Thank you for letting me sleep here. But you need rest too. Go to bed."
He shook his head, a sleepy smile forming. "I'm fine. Just wanted to make sure you were okay."
I couldn't help but smile back. "Thank you, Alex. For everything."
He reached up, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "You're welcome, Karyna. We'll figure all of this out. Together."
I nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude and affection for him. "Yes, we will."
Alexander's eyes started to droop, exhaustion clear in his features. "You should really sleep in your bed, Alex," I insisted softly.
He shook his head, fighting to stay awake. "No, I want to stay by your side. Just in case."
I frowned, not wanting him to be uncomfortable. "But you look so tired. Please, just get some proper rest. I'll be fine."
He gave me a stubborn smile. "I'll sleep better knowing you're safe."
Seeing that he wasn't going to budge, I sighed and pulled the blanket off the couch. "Fine. But at least let me make you more comfortable." I draped the blanket over him, tucking it around his shoulders.
"Thanks," he mumbled, his eyes fluttering shut.
I sat back down on the couch, watching him for a moment. Despite his stubbornness, I couldn't help but feel touched by his dedication. As his breathing evened out, I whispered, "Goodnight, Alex."
...
The next morning, I awoke feeling a bit disoriented. I groggily got up and, in my half-asleep state, tripped over something on the floor. I stumbled forward, landing on Alexander, our faces just inches apart. His eyes fluttered open, and he gave me a playful grin.
"Did you just literally fall for me, lovely?" he teased, his voice husky with sleep.
I blushed furiously, trying to scramble off him. "I—no, I just tripped—"
Before I could finish, Lyra walked in, her eyes widening as she took in the scene. "Well, that went faster than I intended," she remarked with a smirk. "But seriously, get up. The headmaster has something important to say to the students."
I quickly stood up, my face still red, and helped Alexander to his feet. He chuckled, brushing off his clothes. "Come on, lovely. Let's see what all the fuss is about."
We made our way through the corridors towards the assembly hall, the air buzzing with curiosity and anticipation. As we rounded a corner, we almost collided with Professor Blackwood, who looked as serious as ever.
"Professor," Alexander greeted him. "Do you know what the headmaster wants to talk about?"
Professor Blackwood's eyes narrowed slightly. "I have an idea, but it's best if you hear it from him directly. Just stay vigilant."
With that cryptic advice, he continued on his way, leaving us even more intrigued.
We entered the hall, joining the throng of students gathered to hear the headmaster's announcement. The headmaster, a tall, imposing figure, stood at the front of the room, waiting for everyone to settle down.
"Students," he began, his voice carrying through the hall. As the headmaster continued his speech, the atmosphere in the hall grew even more tense. "The war against the dark forces has taken a bad turn," he announced gravely. "We have no choice but to involve everyone in the fight, even the first and second years. After graduation, you will all be joining the effort. We have two months to prepare, and during this time, our focus will be on intensive training."
A wave of shock and fear rippled through the crowd. I felt my heart drop as I processed the words. We were all going to war. I glanced at Alexander, my worry evident in my eyes. He reached out, squeezing my hand firmly and leaning in to whisper in my ear, "Everything will be fine, Lovely."
His reassurance gave me a small measure of comfort, but the reality of the situation was daunting. The headmaster dismissed us, instructing everyone to begin training immediately and to find partners. Alexander and I naturally paired up, as did Maya, Lyra, and Marcus, each of them partnering with dragon riders.
As we made our way to the training grounds, the weight of the impending war hung heavy over us. We arrived at the designated area, where instructors were already setting up various training exercises. The air buzzed with a mixture of anxiety and determination.
"Alright, Lovely," Alexander said, his tone both serious and encouraging. "Let's show them what we've got."
We began with basic combat drills, focusing on honing our reflexes and coordination. Despite the grim circumstances, there was a certain rhythm to our movements, a silent communication that had developed between us over time. We moved seamlessly together, each anticipating the other's actions.
Nearby, Maya and her partner were practicing aerial maneuvers, their dragons swooping and diving with impressive agility. Lyra and Marcus were engaged in a fierce sparring match, their dragon partners watching intently. The determination on their faces mirrored my own resolve.
As the hours passed, the intensity of the training increased. We were pushed to our limits, learning new techniques and refining our skills. Alexander was always by my side, his presence a constant source of strength and encouragement.
During a short break, I sat down, catching my breath. Alexander handed me a flask of water, his eyes full of concern. "How are you holding up, Lovely?"
I managed a tired smile. "I'm fine, just... a lot to take in."
He nodded, sitting beside me. "I know. But we're in this together. We'll get through it."
I leaned against him, taking comfort in his words. The world felt a little less daunting with him by my side.
As we resumed our training, I felt a renewed sense of determination. The war loomed on the horizon, but we would be ready. We had to be. For the sake of Astoria and for each other, we would face whatever came our way.
By the end of the day, exhaustion had set in, but there was also a sense of accomplishment. We had taken the first steps in preparing for the battles ahead. As we made our way back to the dorms, the sun setting behind us, I felt a glimmer of hope amidst the uncertainty.
Alexander walked beside me, his hand brushing against mine. "Remember, Lovely," he said softly, "no matter what happens, we'll face it together."
