The room was cloaked in darkness, the only source of light filtering through the thin curtains that hung over the window. I huddled in the corner, my small frame pressed against the wall as I tried to make myself as small as possible.

Outside, the sounds of raised voices and crashing objects echoed through the house, sending waves of fear coursing through my young heart. Tears stung my eyes as I buried my face in my knees, praying for the chaos to end.

It had been like this for as long as I could remember. My parents, consumed by their own demons, had become shadows of the people they once were, their love twisted into something dark and ugly.

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block out the memories of their anger and frustration, but they lingered like ghosts in the corners of my mind. I longed for escape, for a place where I could be safe and free from the pain that haunted me day and night.

As the sounds of the argument outside grew louder, I wrapped my arms around myself, seeking solace in the warmth of my own embrace. In that moment, I made a silent vow to myself: one day, I would break free from the chains that bound me and forge my own path, away from the darkness that threatened to consume me.

But for now, all I could do was wait, my heart heavy with the weight of a burden too heavy for a child to bear.

As I fled through the window and into the night, my heart hammered in my chest, each beat a frantic rhythm urging me onward. The cool night air brushed against my tear-stained cheeks as I stumbled into the depths of the enchanted forest, guided only by the eerie glow of the moonlight filtering through the dense canopy above.

A mysterious shadow that had whispered to me beckoned from the darkness, its form shifting and twisting as it led me deeper into the woods. With each step, my fear grew, a gnawing pit of dread that threatened to swallow me whole. But still, I pressed on, driven by a desperate need to escape the horrors of my home.

Finally, we reached a small cave hidden amidst the tangled roots of an ancient tree. I collapsed to the ground, my body shaking with sobs as the weight of my despair crashed over me like a tidal wave. Why had I run away? Why had I left my family behind, even if they had hurt me?

But as I lay there, consumed by guilt and regret, the sound of crackling flames reached my ears, followed by the acrid stench of smoke. My heart lurched in my chest as I realized the source of the inferno: my home, engulfed in flames.

Panic surged through me, overriding all other thoughts as I scrambled to my feet and raced back through the forest, the shadow by my side urging me onward. As I emerged from the trees, the sight that greeted me was one of devastation and despair.

My home lay in ruins, consumed by fire and smoke, the flames licking hungrily at the night sky. Tears streamed down my face as I sank to my knees, the enormity of my loss crashing over me in crushing waves.

As I knelt there, my heart heavy with grief, a searing pain ripped through my arm, so intense that it felt as if my very soul was being torn asunder. With a cry of agony, I clutched at my arm, my fingers closing around something small and sharp embedded in my flesh.

Through the haze of pain and despair, I caught a glimpse of a strange symbol etched into the surface of the object, glowing with an otherworldly light. It pulsed with a faint energy, sending ripples of sensation coursing through my body like an electric shock.

Before I could comprehend what was happening, the relic vanished, leaving only a lingering ache in its wake. Weakness washed over me in a dizzying wave, my vision blurring as darkness crept in at the edges.

Suddenly, I felt strong arms lifting me from the ground, cradling me in their embrace as if I were a fragile doll. Voices echoed in the distance, muffled and indistinct, as if they were speaking to me from the depths of a dream.

Then, like a candle flickering in the wind, consciousness slipped away, and I fell into the waiting embrace of oblivion.

When I awoke, I found myself lying in a strange bed, the soft glow of lamplight casting dancing shadows across the walls. A familiar face hovered over me, concern etched into every line and crease.

"Karyna, dear, are you alright?" Lyra's mother's voice was filled with worry as she brushed a strand of hair from my forehead.

Confusion clouded my thoughts as I struggled to make sense of my surroundings. Memories of the fire and the relic flashed through my mind, leaving me reeling with a sense of disorientation.

Mr. Blackwood stood nearby, his expression grave as he examined me with a scrutinizing gaze. "You gave us quite a fright, Karyna," he said, his voice gentle yet firm. "But you're safe now, thanks to your friend Lyra and her parents."

I turned to see Lyra standing at the foot of the bed, her eyes filled with relief as she offered me a reassuring smile. "You're going to be okay, Karyna," she said softly, her voice a soothing balm to my frayed nerves.

As Lyra's words washed over me, a wave of gratitude flooded my heart. Despite the turmoil and uncertainty of the moment, I found solace in the unwavering support of my friend.

"Thank you, Lyra," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know what I would do without you."

Lyra reached out, taking my hand in hers with a gentle squeeze. "You'll never have to find out," she replied, her tone filled with warmth and sincerity.

As I lay there, enveloped in the cocoon of Lyra's comforting presence, the events of the night played out in my mind like a haunting melody. The fire, the relic, the pain—it all seemed like fragments of a surreal nightmare, distant and unreal.

With a deep breath, I closed my eyes, allowing the steady rhythm of my friend's heartbeat to lull me into a peaceful slumber.

As I drifted on the cusp of sleep, a solemn vow formed in the depths of my heart, a promise to myself forged from the ashes of tragedy and loss. I vowed never to succumb to the darkness that had consumed my parents, never to let it snuff out the light within me as it had theirs.

And as sleep finally claimed me, I carried this vow with me into the realm of dreams.
