"Can you just tell me what to scribble down already! We're running out of time," My eyes darted between the clock and the guy sitting across from me. The ticking of the clock is normally noticeable but the only sound I hear is my rushing heartbeat.
"Not this time Eek, its your problem not mine." Kev interjected as he poked his head out of book.
"Come on Kev, give your best friend a solid" I raised my pen towards him. "You could atleast help me look up the answers," My fingers rapidly tapped against the table.
"You literally had two weeks to get it done Eiko. You didn't even write your own name on the packet. You dug another one of your graves that I won't be digging you out of." Kev flatly responded. He slumped further into his chair and rested his feet on the table.
I grabbed my pen and reached over the table to click it in front of his face.
He always hated me doing that. It shouldn't have surprised me when he grabbed my pen and chucked it across the classroom hitting the wall behind me.
"Do your homework already." He returned to his book.
"Well now I can't even if I wanted to," I countered.
"You really have a talent in creating excuses you know that right?"
"It's just one of my few natural gifts, what can I say"
"Can't believe I dealt with 7 years of this" he lowered his book and gave a soft sigh, "I don't need to remind you that the pack-it is worth like 15 percent of your grade, right?"
"Alright-alright, I'll write something down." I stood up from my chair and turned around as I heard the squeaking sound of Kev's shoes touching the floor.
"Hey, I'm pretty sure it's behind the bookshelf, sorry about that."
"Yeah, 'preciate it,"
Two tall white shelves lined up against the wall with a small brown bookshelf between them. It was short enough for me to stretch over the small column of dictionaries and encyclopedias. I looked down into the shadowy cavern between the wall and shelf and plunged my arm into the unknown. My fingers touched the cold-dusty small sliver of floor on the other side. I couldn't see much in the ravine but my eyes were just able to make out a vague figure almost out of reach.
"17 minutes til the bell!" Kev alerted me.
I pressed my face against the side of the tall bookshelf to my right. My right arm was fully stretched out with my pinky and ring finger desperately trying to move my pen closer to me until my pinky accidently kicked it away. Panicking, I raised myself higher with my toes and crunched my face further against the wall. My fingers clawed at the floor in search of anything.
Suddenly I felt a sharp piercing stab on my ring finger. I yanked my arm out from the cavern. My hands laid on top the bookshelf to examine the wound. But there wasn't a single drop of blood or any indentation on my finger. I was about ready to give up on attempting to finish my homework packet until from the corner of my eye I noticed a shiny white marker sitting on top of a textbook.
"Cool marker," I took the pen and made my way towards my seat.
"You know you could've asked to borrow my pencil right?"
I pretended not to notice Kev as I sat down. I popped the cap off of the marker and scribbled some lines on a page corner. Fine point with little bleeding- the perfect marker. I skimmed through the first question with my marker following the words.
I ready to give some BS answer until I stumbled upon new text that I didn't remember seeing just a few seconds ago. It seemingly appeared out of nowhere and fully answered the question. My eyebrows drew closer as I recognized the hand writing.
"Kev did you answer the first question for me while I was gone?"
"Nope. You got 15 minutes by the way," he said with his nose in his book.
My hands frantically pulled my attention back to the paper as I once again skimmed through the next question, marker trailing along.
Kev had been focusing on his book the entire time. He's smart but there's no way he's fast enough to write down an answer for a complicated question about some US government bill while I was looking for my pen.
The empty lines where I was supposed to write an answer were suddenly being filled by my own handwriting. My eyes widened as I stared at the flowing streaks of ink making it's way from left to right. The way the text was being written it was almost... robotic? My hands tightened their grip on the paper as "my" answer was being finished.
I placed the marker away from me. I brought the paper closer to my face, my eyes analyzed the third question with unblinking eyes. The answer box laid empty. My left hand brushed my messy black hair away from my face as I laid the paper away from me.
"14 minutes! Come on Eek!" Kev teased.
"Yeah- yeah, I'm- I know."
Kev looked up from his book to look at the paper, "Wow, you wrote down your name and answered two whole questions! Scholarly stuff right there."
A shiver went down my spine.
"Kev what'd you say?"
"13 minutes."
Kev was totally oblivious to how freaked out I was.
I didn't write down my name, no- yeah no I didn't.
I skimmed through the 3rd question with my pen in hand with the answer being fully written down by the time I reached the question mark.
4th, 5th, 6th...
The crushing weight on my chest began to lessen as more and more of my work was being done. When I flipped to the last page, the last question was already being filled out.
Kev slammed his book shut and reached for his bag, "alright Eek, I'll give you 10 minutes to copy me. I think you learned your-"
A rush of air filled the space between us as I slammed my completed packet before him.
"That was pretty easy actually, like I don't know why I was stressing over it," I replied nonchalantly.
Kev's face was a mix of shock and disbelief. It felt really good to see his face change from doubt to impressed as he was going through the packet. Then it changed to confusion.
"Come on, lets head to class early. You know- be scholarly and stuff," I put away my homework and walked towards the door with my head up high and arms swinging. I fiddled and waved my new marker around my hand as I exited the classroom.
