I woke up early to prepare myself for my first official day at Hogwarts in the forties. Sabrina and Draycie seemed to be fast asleep and last nights events had me cursing silently under my breath as I changed into my emerald green uniform. It was odd seeing my reflection in the mirror.
The black and green robes made my green eyes stand out compared to the Hufflepuff uniform which had always made me look quite pale. What was even more odd, is that I could almost swear that I spoke to that snake Malfoy conjured at me. I decided to ignore it for the moment as I soon had to be alone with Riddle, the future Dark Lord. I was terrified but I promised myself not to show it.
I decided to keep my hair down, brushing it quickly before making my way into the common room where Riddle would be waiting for me. He was sitting in the same armchair as a few hours prior. I wouldn't be surprised if he had spent the night in that chair reading. He stood up and extended his hand to shake mine. I felt a chill run down my spine; I knew I could not deny him a simple handshake for the second time.
Do it.
It's simple Amelia, just shake his hand.
I extended my hand and took his in mine. I could tell my cold and rough hands caught Riddle by surprise.
Everything about Tom Riddle was unsettling to me.
He was too perfect to be true, and it scared me how nobody ever doubted him enough to suspect him as an adolescent murderer. He was also one of the most attractive people I had ever laid eyes on: tall and lean, with a sharp jaw, piercing black eyes, and straight pearly white teeth. I had never believed Ginny and Harry when they told me that Tom Riddle was charming and beautiful in his youth. But there he was, as beautiful as ever, and this made him dangerous. Even more dangerous than the noseless monster I knew in my time.
"Shall we begin the tour?" he asked me.
We walked the empty corridors of the castle that I already knew so well. I took in the beauty of Hogwarts that I missed so dearly. The castle had been destroyed, its secrets uncovered, its wonders shattered.
Occasionally, Tom would point out portraits of famous witches and wizards, whom he would talk about briefly. We were now walking up the staircase, and he was telling me all about Timothy the Timid.
"He was actually afraid of many things, including other portraits, which made him incredibly paranoid as time passed."
"You know you sound like you're reciting the encyclopedia," I teased. If I was going to have to bear spending time with young Lord Voldemort, I was going to have fun with it. "Tell me something about Hogwarts that I can't find after a simple read of Hogwarts: A History."
Tom stopped walking up the staircase, turned to look at me. His eyes turned darker than they already were.
"Now, Diggory, did you really think I would openly tell you all about Hogwarts' little secrets? I'm afraid you'll have to discover them yourself." He smirked at me.
A shiver ran down my spine; he had just spoken to me in Parseltongue, and I had understood every single word. I wanted to run right then and there but my body left me paralysed in front of him. He was on to me; I had clearly earned his attention and although this is what I needed, it frightened me.
I was a parselmouth now, which I had never been in the past or should I say future. This meant that Tom was now clearly aware that we shared the ability to talk to snakes. I've piqued his interest and this causes my heart to start racing. I had never spoken to a snake before last night; only Harry could do that because he was one of Voldemort's horcruxes.
Was I a horcrux?
Did this mean I was going to die? Again.
My heart was racing as thousands of questions without answers filled my head.
