The nights in New York only got chillier and the sun set much earlier than it did it the earlier days. It was peak winter and today was a rainy and cloudy day.
It was the perfect weather for Daphne to read her stories in bliss. Her books were coming to an end and she needed to go out and buy some new ones, but she wasn't sure if she was allowed to or what Aurelio expected of her. They never really discussed any of it.
She put down her book and listened to the house. Everyone should be at home today, but she was sure she heard a noise coming from downstairs.
There was a low whistle. She got up from the red couch and grabbed the nearest weapon she could find, which happens to be a door stopper that lay discarded to the side.
It was heavy enough to do some damage if she aimed for the head of the intruder. She tip toed down the stairs, to the one living room and stopped around the corner. Whoever was in the house was in the living room for sure.
She counted herself off. One, two, three.
She spun around with the cubical door stopper in her hand and screamed for extra effect. The light haired, tattooed man in front of her let out a string of curses in Italian and the phone slips grom his hand. "Daphne?" He asked her holding onto his chest to get his breathing steady.
"Who are you?" She asked him holding up the heavy weapon. The longer she stared the more familiar he looked to her.
He slowly picked up his phone and walked over to gently take the door stopper from her hand. "I'm Luca, Aurelio's friend."
She took a step back and narrowed her eyes at him. She now knew how she knew him. He was the one bodyguard at the house and the wedding.
"Nice to meet you." Luca said with his hand open to hers. She didn't put her hand in his awaiting one, not trusting him. "I am just here to check a few things, Aurelio said he'll be back later tonight." He kept on talking while playfully tossing the "weapon" around in his hands.
She eyed him up and down until she stepped forward taking the heavy door stopper with her back to the library. He had gotten through security so he had to be telling the truth. And with his built she didn't stand a chance anyway.
She heard a chuckle from behind as she frustratingly waltzed up the stairs.
When she finally sat down to read again, it took her some time before she got lost in her fantasy world once again.
After hours had passed she put the bookmark in the last hundred pages of her Jane Austin book and got up. Her stomach reminded her that she hadn't eaten since lunch. She left the library dragging her blue cotton blanket with her all the way to the kitchen.
The house has been quiet all day and she hated that all the workers had already gone home. If she had to guess, she'd say Luca was already gone by now, but then she saw the kitchen light was still on.
He was probably in there eating Aurelio's food or something. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the silhouette of another man sitting at the dining table, eating dinner like a normal person would. He was no normal person which made the scene strange. She imagined poisoning the food in front of her and him eating it so carelessly.
His eyes immediately met with hers and the air left her lungs.
Aurelio Romano. My husband.
This man was attractively scary to her. His dark hair and eyes were a great resemblance to the neat black Armani suit he was in. The blazer was hung around the back of the chair. His tie was loosened and the top button open.
