Evangeline tiptoed out of Cabin 5, careful not to wake her snoring siblings. She made her way to the camp's border and plopped down under Thalia's tree. Hugging her knees to her chest, she let out a sigh and gazed at the stars.
Her thoughts drifted to her dad. How could she get him to notice her? Ares had always shown his other kids some kind of appreciation, but not her. Not yet, anyway.
Suddenly, she heard a noise beyond the border. Squinting and adjusting her glasses, she spotted a boy staggering into camp with a satyr.
Evangeline whipped out her celestial bronze dagger and aimed it at the boy. “Who are you?” she demanded, but the boy just cried and looked at her desperately. Recognizing Grover, her eyes widened. “Oh, great,” she muttered, sheathing her dagger and rushing to help them.
Supporting the pair, she practically dragged them to the Big House. She knocked on the door, more annoyed than urgent, until Chiron appeared with wide eyes.
“Evangeline?” he asked. She quickly explained the situation. Chiron nodded like he'd been expecting this and asked for help getting them inside. She obliged, though not without a huff of irritation.
A blonde figure—Annabeth—rushed down to the Big House. The three of them crowded around the raven-haired boy, who was slipping in and out of consciousness on the couch.
“He's the one. He must be,” Annabeth said with certainty.
Evangeline scrunched her face. “He might not be. Look at him.” She pointed to the boy, who was blinking around in confusion like he’d woken up in a bad dream.
“Silence, Annabeth and Evangeline,” Chiron hushed them. “He's still conscious. Let's get him to the infirmary.” The two girls nodded and helped haul him away.
Days passed, and Annabeth and Evangeline took turns looking after the boy—though Evangeline felt more like she was being forced into babysitting duty by Chiron. Today was her turn. She sat beside the bed, cleaning her dagger, when the boy stirred.
He opened his eyes, sea-green and bleary, and stared at her. Evangeline raised an eyebrow. “What, you dork?” she snapped. His face twisted in confusion.
“W-wha?” he mumbled, but dizziness took over, and he fell back asleep, drool slipping from the corner of his mouth. Evangeline wiped it off with a cloth, muttering under her breath about how boys were gross.
Later, she found herself playing pinochle with Mr. D and Chiron, while Annabeth lounged on the porch railing.
“Mr. D! Chiron looked at my cards!” she growled, glaring at her mentor, who shrugged like he'd done nothing wrong.
“I told you, he cheats,” Mr. D said, sipping his Diet Coke. In the midst of her complaining, Grover walked in with the boy, who was still looking around like he’d misplaced his brain.
