"Come on, we aren't far. It's just to get away from the noise, you know?" Luke told me. He was in front of me, his hand gripping mine. It kinda hurt, but I didn't complain. I looked up at the sky, seeing the night sky seep through the trees. I'd never seen this many stars before, but that was probably because of light pollution. They looked really pretty.

Luke let go of my hand and dropped his bag. I watched him gather some sticks and stones before he nodded at me to sit down. He opened his backpack and took out a lighter to light the sticks on fire.

I linked my hands together to pray, but Luke held my closed hands in his grasp. "You have to offer something to them first, something that you value. Throw it in the fire." I thought I didn't have anything until I remembered the pearl earrings I got for my birthday a few days ago. They were dangling from my ears and shone from the fire.

I didn't want to burn them since they were a special present from my dad, but I had to talk to my mom. I took them off and gave them one last look before throwing them into the fire. "Aphrodite, please accept my offering." I spoke to the fire like I spoke to my altar. I closed my eyes and linked my hands together. Luke closed his eyes in respect. "Hi, Mom. If you'll even let me call you that. Thank you for the gift that you gave me when you first claimed me. I look great. But I bet you look ten times better." I had to compliment her. How could you not compliment the goddess of beauty? "Please be merciful upon me and my parents. Well... mortal parents. Send me a sign that they're okay. That they're safe. That's all I want." I opened my eyes for a split second to cry, and I swear, that through the blur of tears I could see Luke looking at me. I closed my eyes again and regained my breath. "Bless them, in hopes that they are safe. And bless me, so this new journey of life won't hurt me. I know you can do many things, Mom." I stopped, rested my hands on my legs and bowed. Luke put out the fire and I could see he looked very bothered.

"Luke? Everything okay?" He nodded and got up. "You wanna pray to your dad?" He stopped for a moment to look at me. "No."
