It took less than two hours for the restaurant to look heavenly and honestly, I couldn't care less. I sat at a chair near the kitchen. I was waiting to be called to bring in the food to the numerous tables lining the restaurant walls. Apparently the middle part of the place was to be the dance floor. The guests started arriving not long after We the waitors set up the tables.
The guests all looked fancy and their clothes could jointly buy me a penthouse to live in. I was serving white wine when a face I never wanted to see happened to enter the place. Stella Holland! My ex best friend. I rolled my eyes, of course Jessy would invite people who hate me and hurt me to her wedding day. Stella was holding my first crush's hand and my biggest bully in Highschool, Charlie Anderson. They were both dressed to perfection. I give credit where its due.
Charlie wore a black expensive looking suit, with a gold bowtie and a white shirt. He looked expensive and as good as always. Stella wore a golden dress with a black belt. It fit her so well, she looked like a model. They were taken to a table on the far right by Kenzie as soon as they entered. Phew! They didn't see me. The next couple of couples were people I vaguely remember from my father's firm. Then entered the parents of the millennium, both wearing a flashy gold colour, clearly to attract everyone's attention. And they did because every guest turned to them. The guy who helped me at the Bachelor's party entered with some pretty looking girl who had a lot of make up on, Evan close behind. I averted my eyes so that he wouldn't see me.
He didn't.
My sister eventually arrived with her groom in a chariot, no literally, a literal chariot with white horses. They entered as everyone stood up, except me. Again, I couldn't care less. I took a strawberry from a bowl nearby and munched on it as people cheered for the couple. I gotta say, I liked their sense of fashion. It reminded me of when we were kids, when I was still loved by my family and Jessy always talked about her wedding being pink themed. I smiled to myself, guess things changed. After all, she once said I would be her best man but again, things change.
I was pulled out of my thoughts by a very cold liquid being poured on me.
"For fucks sake Jake!! How many times must you ruin things before you rest!!" I looked up to see my boss Donald but next to him stood my sister in all her flaming fury glory. She held a glass of red wine, well one that was now empty because the wine was now on my gold suit. I looked down, my only white shirt was soaked with red wine. Well their loss, its them who bought the suit. I looked back up at my sister whose husband was now also behind her...oh yeah, its a wedding. It made me wonder for how long I had zoned out for. Everyone was now staring at me.
"What?" I asked. Her glare turned angrier if possible. I was highly tempted to leave but I needed this job.
"Jake..." My boss spoke calmly and that is why I knew I was in dip shit. He never spoke calmly to me.
"Yeah boss?" I asked. I mean I had done everything he asked right? I set the tables with snacks and food and all that shit right?
"Wheres the ceremonial cake?" He asked. I looked at him confused.
"The what cake?" I was honestly confused. Is that a thing kids do nowadays.
"The cake I told you to pick up half an hour ago." His voice sounded weird. Like he was straining. Did he always sound like this? I looked at his eyes and I immediately understood where he was coming from. Behind him Mr Clement stood holding Mike close to his side. I almost laughed out loud. He forgot! My mean boss forgot something and now he might get fired and he was relying on me. I smirked.
"Oh that cake!!" I chuckled and my sister shrieked. Anger did not look good on her.
"Well I forgot." I said and shrugged. Donald signed in relief. "You forgot?" My sister was really angry but I wasn't prepared for whatever happened next. It all happened too first. She threw the glass in her arm. It hit some part of my head. The pain shot through my whole body and reminded me of my rib pains. Pain, that's all I felt but I was not going to give her the satisfaction she needed. Even Donald seemed shocked, not just him though. Everyone in the room. Even my mean parents, I bet they didn't know their violence towards me rubbed off on their daughter. Mike rushed to my side and so did Kenzie. I was grareful for them.
"You ok love?" Asked Kenzie. My sisters eyes widened and so did my parents. Ha! They must think Kenzie is my girlfriend. I tried to nod but couldn't. It was too painful.
"Yeah."My voice came out hoarse but I still smiled a bit. "Nothing a glass of whiskey cant fix." Kenzie smiled. Good, I didnt want them to worry.
"Only Jake can joke at such a time." Mike giggled. I smiled and leaned back on the table behind my chair. It didn't have a backrest.
"Am gonna get you home." Said Kenzie already taking off her suit jacket. She rushed to the kitchen and came back wearing her red leather jacket. She looked pretty, or maybe the world was just spinning. She had her car keys in one hand. I stopped her.
"No am fine...just call me a taxi Kenz... You have to stay here and work." Kenzie glared at me but turned to Mr Donald.
"Oh am done here love....right Mr Donald?"Her voice was threatening enough.
"Yes yes...you should take Jake home to rest." He rushed out. Was he really scared of Kenzie? Maybe I was becoming delirious.
"Coming with." Said Mike swiftly helping me stand. His boy friend looked conflicted but didn't speak. I tried to reason with them but my brain became too hazy. The last thing I remember was looking straight at Stella before I fell deep into darkness.
