A few days later, Jack was sitting on a chair in her room, reading a book as the hotel bustled. Charlie was celebrating Pentious's first week at the hotel. After a bit, she looked up to see Alastor standing in her doorway. "What's up, Alastor?" Jack asked.
"You are aware of what is occurring today, aren't you, Jacklynn?" he asked. Jack sighed and nodded.
"Yeah, I'm aware, but you know perfectly well how I feel about those meetings." She said.
"It doesn't matter. All Overlords must attend." Alastor said.
"I know. I'll be there." Jack said. That was when she noticed Pentious's eggs following after Alastor. "Uh, any reason those things are following you?"
"Miss Vaggie has asked me to dispose of these things humanely so I'm temporarily stuck with them for the time being." Alastor said.
"Okay, then, have fun with that. I'll see you at the meeting." Jack said as Alastor left, the eggs trailing after him, one of which stopped to wave at Jack before scrambling after Alastor. After ten minutes, Jack sighed and got up, putting her book back on the shelf, grabbing her jacket and exiting her room.
She passed Magny in the hall, who climbed up onto her shoulder as she walked. "Where are you going?" She asked.
"Meeting. You know the one." Jack said.
"Oh man, those stuffy overlord meetings?" Jack jumped as she heard Zen behind her. She smirked.
"That's the one." She said. "Do me a favor and help Charlie keep things under control over here."
"You got it, chief." Zen said as Magny jumped from Jack's shoulder to his. Jack smiled and walked to the staircase.
Charlie looked up as Jack walked down the stairs. "Hey, Jack! Wanna help us put this stuff up?"
Jack smiled softly. "I'd love to, Charlie, but I've got something I've got to do today. But Zen and Magny are all yours. I'll be back later." She raised a hand in goodbye as she exited the hotel and walked down the sidewalk. She stuffed one hand in her pocket while summoning her staff to her left hand as she walked.
The walk to the meeting was largely uneventful besides someone trying to ambush her, which was quickly ended. The guy really hadn't been very smart to attack her in the first place. Soon, the meeting place came into view and Jack took one of the elevators up where she saw her fellow Overlords entering the room. She took a seat on the other side of Rosie, the cannibal Overlord, giving both Rosie and Alastor, who was on Rosie's other side, a short wave.
Carmilla Carmine came into the room. "Welcome, Hell's sovereign overlords. I've invited you all here because you represent the controlling powers of our city. Together, you own millions of souls. Souls at risk with the new Extermination schedule." She slammed her fist on the ground. "We need to discuss what can be done to minimize the impact to our interest." Zestial took his seat, summoning a teacup and saucer. Carmilla continued. "Zestial, so good to see you my friend."
"Enchanted as always, Carmilla." Zestial said.
That was when Carmilla noticed Alastor. "Alastor?"
Alastor smiled bigger, looking a little smug. "Yes, I know I've been absent some time. I'm sure you've all been wondering."
"Not really." Carmilla said, causing Alastor to look annoyed behind his smile. "But welcome back in any case." Alastor narrowed his eyes, looking offended in Carmilla's direction as Jack bit back a smirk. Carmilla continued. "This year's Extermination was brutal, far more even than years past. We have assessed that about sixteen percent of the population was lost." A slide was projected on the wall behind her. With the angelic legions now returning twice as quickly, I think it prudent we-"
She was cut off as the door slammed open and Velvette came walking in, on her phone. "Yes, I've got it handled, Vox. Are you doubting me? Really? Me? That's what i thought. Yes, I know. They're all a joke. Thank you, V. See you soon. Kisses, darling." Jack glared at her as she hung up the phone, sitting at the opposite end of the table to Carmilla.
"Nice of you to join us, Velvette. Will your... colleagues be joining?" Carmilla asked.
"No, they have better stuff to do than listen to an old windbag who thinks she's tough stuff. I'm here to represent." Velvette said.
"Charming." Carmilla said. "So, as I was saying, we need to discuss-" Carmilla stopped again as Velvette waved her hand in the air. Jack laid her head on the table, suppressing a groan. "Yes?" Carmilla said.
"On the subject of discussion," Velvette said. She took out the head of an Exorcist and threw it on the table. Jack's head snapped up as she looked at the head in shock. The other overlords were looking at the head and muttering to each other.
"Oh! Tasty..." Alastor said.
Carmilla narrowed her eyes at Velvette. "Where did you get this?" she asked.
"We found it during Extermination Day. If these Holy Rollers can be killed, the game has changed." Velvette got up on top of the table. "We can take the fight to them. The boys and I have come up with a full assault plan-"
Velvette stopped as she, Jack and the other Overlords looked over at Zestial, who was sipping his tea aggressively and loudly to drown out Velvette. "If it be true thee and thy colleagues desire to war with such meagre proof, though art far more foolish than I be thought."
Velvette scoffed. "Meagre proof? It's a dead Exorcist. I'd say that's pretty definitive. You going blind, old man?"
"We know not how this perished. Mayhaps t'was not by a demon's hand at all. If we rush to war without knowing, mightn't they purge all of Hell for daring an uprising?" Zestial said. All the other overlords started muttering in agreement.
Vevette looked at Carmilla. "Oh I get it. So Grandpa is too wimpy to fight, so I guess there's no point right?" She got up in Zestial's face. "Oh, what's matter, Fossil? Too senile to make a real power grab for-"
"You better show some respect! Check your behaviour! No one speaks to Zestial that way!" Carmilla snapped. This kick started a song war between Carmilla and Velvette, which only ended when Carmilla exclaimed, "This meeting's over!" As the two continued to glare at each other, Alastor spoke.
"That was a productive meeting!"
"Hm, fine. Safe travels back the nursing home!" Velvette snapped as she walked out the door.
Zeezi, another wolf sinner demon who took more of the wolf features along with a large size, scoffed. "What the heck? We literally just got here."
All of the overlords got up and started to leave. Jack gave Rosie a wave before letting Alastor know she'd meet him back at the hotel. She then took the elevator down, spotting Pentious's eggs who waved at her eagerly as she walked away.
She twirled her staff around absentmindedly as she thought about what Velvette had said. Though a little extreme, she did make a small point. If the Exorcists could be killed, maybe there was something they could do. The problem was, no one knew how that would be possible.
When she got back, Charlie eagerly waved at her from where she and Vaggie stood on the balcony. "Jack! How was your outing?" she asked.
"Nothing interesting to report." Jack said. "Things here okay?" Charlie nodded. As Jack walked over to the bar, she noted that Angel, Pentious and Husk seemed to be getting along better then before. She then heard the door open as Alastor came in, the eggs behind him.
"Alastor!" Vaggie exclaimed. Alastor looked up at her as Vaggie leaned on the railing. "Failed to get rid of the eggs I see."
"Yes, well, the little monsters proved to be rather useful." As Alastor spoke the last word, his expression took a more sinister look.
"Why don't you give them back to Pentious." Vaggie said.
Pentious looked at her all teary eyed. "Really?" He asked.
"Yeah, after today, I guess I can trust you with them. But seriously, no more weapons." Vaggie ordered.
Pentious slithered to his eggs, embracing them all. "Ahhh! My eggs! It's so good to have you back!" He dropped them. "Now, go clean my quarters this instant!" At the command, the eggs scattered as Charlie and Vaggie watched.
"Maybe things'll move faster then you think." Charlie said.
