Days blurred together as Y/N drifted in and out of consciousness, caught in the hazy embrace of pain and healing. The medical bay at Avengers Tower became their sanctuary—a place of beeping monitors, sterile white walls, and the constant presence of their teammates.Bucky rarely left Y/N's side, his vigil unwavering as he watched over them with a mix of guilt and tenderness. He blamed himself for what had happened, haunted by the fear of losing Y/N—the person who had come to mean more to him than he had ever dared to acknowledge.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow through the windows of the medical bay, Y/N stirred from a fitful sleep. They found Bucky seated beside their bed, his gaze fixed on the floor with a heavy burden of guilt etched into his features.
"Hey," Y/N murmured, their voice barely above a whisper.
Bucky looked up, his eyes widening with relief as he met their gaze. "Hey. How are you feeling?"
Y/N managed a weak smile, their strength slowly returning with each passing day. "Better. The pain's more manageable now."
Bucky nodded, his expression tight with emotion. "I'm sorry, Y/N. This shouldn't have happened."
"It's not your fault," Y/N reassured him softly, their hand reaching out to touch his. "We knew the risks. It comes with the territory."
Bucky's fingers intertwined with theirs, his touch gentle yet hesitant. "I never wanted you to get hurt because of me."
"You didn't," Y/N insisted earnestly. "You saved me, remember? That's what matters."
Bucky's gaze softened, a flicker of gratitude and something deeper—a longing that mirrored their own. "I don't know what I would've done if..."
"You didn't lose me," Y/N interrupted gently, their voice filled with conviction. "And you won't. I'm right here."
They fell into a comfortable silence, the weight of unspoken words hanging between them. Y/N could feel the gentle thrum of Bucky's heartbeat beneath their fingertips—a steady rhythm that spoke of unspoken yearning and the fragile hope of a future together.
"I need to tell you something," Bucky said suddenly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Y/N's heart skipped a beat, their gaze locking with his in silent anticipation. "What is it?"
Bucky took a deep breath, his words tumbling out in a rush of emotion. "I love you, Y/N. More than I ever thought possible."
A surge of warmth flooded Y/N's chest, their own confession hovering on the tip of their tongue. "Bucky, I..."
Before they could respond, the medical bay doors slid open, revealing Steve standing in the doorway with a somber expression. "Sorry to interrupt, but we've got a situation. Another Hydra base has gone active."
Bucky's jaw clenched with frustration, torn between duty and the overwhelming need to stay by Y/N's side. "I have to go."
Y/N nodded, their heart heavy with the weight of unfinished words. "Go. We'll talk later."
Bucky squeezed their hand gently, his eyes lingering on their face with unspoken regret. "I'll be back."
As Bucky rushed out of the medical bay, leaving Y/N with a whirlwind of conflicting emotions, they couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of hope—a hope that despite the challenges they faced as Avengers, their love story was just beginning.
And as they watched Bucky disappear down the corridor, Y/N knew that their journey was far from over—a journey marked by healing, forgiveness, and the unbreakable bond that had blossomed amidst the chaos of their lives as superheroes.
