Sakura and Sasuke continued their way east. Their walk was leisurely, and Sakura reveled in the beauty of the changing sceneries they passed by almost every day. She caught Sasuke glancing at her every so often, and always directed a smile his way too.
It was as such they arrived at the place where the 4th Great Shinobi War took place all those years ago. No village had touched upon these lands, and it had been left as it was from the years that followed, nature slowly taking ahold of it.
The roots from the God Tree were still sprawled over the land, and it was one one of these roots, under the cover of some dense foliage that they were now sitting on for refuge from the night. Sasuke had been against it, but even he could find no other excuse against the heavy rain that had started pouring. Sakura sat with her legs dangling from the side, Sasuke next to her, staring at the sky.
"Again, I could take us somewhere else with my rinnegan." Sasuke said to her.
"And again, you shouldn't use your eye for such trivial matters." Sakura looked up at him, "It's really fine."
"Hn."
She followed his eyes to the sky, where the clouds were heavy, and lightning lit up distant lands.
"I usually like rainy nights, but to think I'd be enjoying one here with you never crossed my mind. After all, it doesn't have good memories."
She felt Sasuke looking at her profile, but kept her eyes fixed to the sky.
"Yeah, it does."
The rain let up slightly, and sakura felt the chill of the air nip at her exposed legs. she folded them to her chest, trying to cover up with her cloak. To her surprise, Sasuke shed his, lightly placing it over her lap.
"You don't have-"
"It's fine, keep it," he cut her off, shifting slightly so that her side was pressed against his legs.
Sakura tried not to fidget.
"Back then," Sasuke said. "I was in a very dark place." He wasn't looking at her, but Sakura listened silently, his quiet words letting her in as he talked about his most painful days.
"I wanted nothing to do with anyone. I just wanted revenge, solitude, and to make the world better again. My way." He scoffed silently to himself, voice fading, and Sakura remembered the numerous times he had rejected their bond, refused himself happiness, and cloaked himself in darkness so much to the point that she was unable to recognise him anymore.
"Yet still, you and Naruto, you never gave up on me," he continued, and he looked at her then. "You taught me what it was to have bonds again, to smile and be happy again. To finally, have a home to return to again."
The rain had completely let up at this point, and the clouds shifted, parting ways for the moonlight.
Sakura smiled at him, eyes shining with unshed tears. "You'll always have a home to return to with us."
He let a rare smile grace his lips, and Sakura felt his hand on her cheek, cradling it so gently her heart broke for the man before her.
"Sakura, you have kept on loving me in my darkest moments. I know it's selfish of me to want you all for me, and I know that you deserve someone way better than me, but I want to have a home I can always return to with you. I want our bond to continue even if we are far away from each other. I want to hear your voice, to feel you when I want to like this."
He gently wiped a tear streaking down her face.
"I want that too, sasuke-kun."
Sasuke moved his fingers through her hair, wrapping the back of her head and bringing their foreheads together. Their faces were impossibly close, the tips of their noses touching, and Sakura could see the moonlight dancing in Sasuke's eyes. In the reflection, she could see the one thing she always yearned for from him looking back at her.
"Sakura, will you marry me?"
Sakura closed her eyes, savoring the moment as she cupped Sasuke's face with both her hands, "Yes, Sasuke-kun."
The clouds had parted away, and the full moon was out in all its glory. Under the moonlit night, at a place where so many people and despaired, herself included, she finally felt peace fall into both their hearts, and a stronger bond, almost like gravity, pulling them toward each other. With only the moon as their witness, the two hearts took their vows of eternity, and a gentle kiss exchanged sealed the deal, making way for new moments for them to create, together.
"Sakura, the moon is pretty, isn't it?"
"It is, Sasuke-kun.
