Harry just pulled me in the kitchen and usually if I didn’t put something away but I put everything away so I was confused here. “Yes?” I ask. “Okay so you know Zane right?”
“The one out there or someone else? Because if you’re talking about that one, how could I not?” I state. “Anyway, I wanted your opinion on something.” “And that something has something to do with Zane?” I state. “Yes.” I wait for him to continue so I ask “So? What’s up?” as I put my arms up in question. “So, how would you feel if he...uh,” I wait for him to continue, “if he, works here? With us?”
My eyes widen to the point I feel them hurt as they beg to pop out. We hear the signal that customers came in and hear voices like, “Yes please” and hear shuffling. Harry and I both look at each other and run to see what’s happening. We peek out from our position hiding behind the little wall that led to the kitchen. We both watch as Zane helps put together a table for a family and says, “There you go” and the woman thanks him as she tells everyone to sit down. “It’s no problem” he replies and smiles at her before coming back to where he was sitting.
Harry and I both tuck our heads back as he heads to sit down. We go back to the place we were standing before to continue our conversation that was put on hold. “See, he even helped those people and plus, he’s got a good face.” I look at him and ask, “So?”
“So, good faces attract people.” I laugh and ask, “So you want to use him for his looks to get more customers?” He shrugs and I stop laughing. “Wait you’re serious?!” “It’s not a bad idea” he says as he puts his arms up in surrender. “You’re crazy” I say and roll my eyes.
If you keep doing that your eyes are going to get stuck up there.
Shut up.
“So what do you think?” Harry asks, playfulness out of sight. I give it some thought and see the disadvantages and advantages and then scratch all the tallies I tallied up in my head and say, “Sure, why not. We’ll give it a try.”
“Well then, you just got yourself a partner.” He says as he fakes his Australian accent. We walk back out and see him playing with the menu. “Zane.” he looks up at the sound of Harry’s voice. “Am I in trouble or something?” he asks when we don’t say anything. “How would you feel if... we gave you a, uh... promotion?”
“What kind of promotion?”
“A new job kind of promotion?”
“You’re hiring me?”
“Yes.”
“To work here?”
“Yes.”
We both wait for him to answer when he looks at me for a while before turning back to Harry and says, “Hell yes.” Harry goes over and welcomes him to his job and asks his schedule. “Well I work at that pizza place just down the road on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, so I could work on the days I don’t work there?”
