Smokey air filled my lungs as I stepped into the platform, my heavy trolly wobbling on the uneven ground. I sighed as I saw people hugging their families goodbye, something I couldn't do as my family was back in America. Ilvermorny was a nice school, but my parents felt I would be better educated at Hogwarts. Why they didn't think of this for the first sixteen years of my life I don't know. but im here now, and- perhaps, a little excited.
i shook myself out of my daze as the giant steam engine's horn blew; last call for all passengers. i hurriedly pushed my trolly towards the luggage compartment and stepped onto the train. laughter and gossip filled the passage way, and by the time i found a compartment with room i practically knew everything about school.i peered into the small seated room, on one bench a bleach blond kid sat with his back against the wall, lazily casting simple spells with his wand. to his right a pretty black haired girl leaned against him, obviously longing for his attention.
and sitting opposite them, with his legs stretched out, a boy with dark eyes, curly brown hair, and a small scar across the bridge of his nose. he was reading something, and twirling his wand in his hand.
i opened the compartment door and put my head inside. when no one looked up i cleared my throat awkwardly. the blond boy and his (seemingly) girlfriend, both looked up."yes?" the blond boy drawled.
" i-um," i stuttered. "could i sit with you guys? everywhere else is full..."
the boy looked me up and down, rolling his eyes.
"oh, of course she can dray-dray!" the girl exclaimed, hitting his shoulder.
i smiled hesitantly and walked in, shutting the door behind me. the only open seat was where the brunette boys feet were. i stepped over to him, and when he didn't move i sat awkwardly on the edge of the seat, just between the wall and his feet.
" so," the girl started. " i haven't seen you before, are you new? what year are you?"
not knowing which question to answer first i respond, "yes- i mean- yeah, sixth year.."
she gave me a comforting smile, and i relaxed a bit.that was until the blond asked annoyingly, "what's wrong with your voice?"
i furrowed my brow, confused as to what he meant."ugh," the girl said, shaking her head. " there's nothing wrong with her voice, she just has an American accent."
ohhh i thought
" yeah, i'm transferring here from Ilvermorny, i'm Aria Strayers."
"hm," he replied uninterested.
" well i hope you get sorted into slitheryn," the girl said smiling. "i'm Pansy by the way, this is draco Malfoy -" she said, nudging the blond. "-and that's mattheo.." she said pausing as she gestured to the brown haired boy. "mattheo riddle."
there was an awkward silence that followed, although i wasn't sure why.
finally Draco broke the silence by asking rudely, " so are you a pure blood?"
i swiveled my head, shocked to see Pansy looking at me, apparently blood statice is far more important here...
"umm- i guess you could say that, yes," i replied, getting over my confusion.
"good," Draco said nodding. " don't you think that's how it should be for everyone? so stupid that this school allows mudbloods and blood traitors to walk it's halls-"
i abruptly stood up, outraged and shocked by his terminology.
"you good?" Draco questions, although not seeming like he particularly cared.
" yes, im f-fine," i said sharply before turning on my heel and walking out of the compartment.
the train isle was bustling as people crowded around an old lady with a trolley full of sweets. knowing i didn't want to go back to the others quite yet, i stood patiently around the trolley, waiting my turn.
after nearly ten minutes the area around the sweets finally cleared, and i walked up to the lady."may i get one chocolate frog, and two cauldron cakes?" i asked politely.
" yes, yes of course" the lady said, fumbling for what i'd asked and taking the coins i held out for her.
as i made my way back to the others i peered into the other compartments. they were all filled with students of many different ages, with the youngest looking to be ten or eleven, and the oldest going on eighteen.
as i reached the compartment i had been in i realized that draco and pansy were gone, probably to find some where more private...i sat down across from Mattheo and tilted my head. he was reading To Kill A Mockingbird. a classic. i looked at his face, he was quite handsome, with dark eye brows, a strong jaw, and (sadly) an everlasting frown creased into his face
" you just gonna stare all day or actually say something?" he asked looking up. i jumped, not realizing i was staring.
"sorry.." i mumbled. " so are you also in your sixth year?"
"yes"
"do you like hogwarts?"
" it's fine""what's it li-"
"why are you talking to me?" he questioned, cutting me off.
"i dont know," i said frowning. " because it's weird if i don't..?"
" do you even know who i am?"
"no," i said wondering why that had anything to do with it. "Should i?"
he raised his brow, " does the name tom riddle ring a bell?"
i snapped my mouth shut, how did i not put the pieces together!
"you're the son of voldemort,"
he looked up sharply a questioning look in his eyes.
" you said his name," he said quietly.
it wasn't a question really, more of a statement, but i figured i should say something.
"fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself."
he looked at me blankly- damn this kid is hard to read.
" so you're not afraid?"
" oh i am, but fear doesn't do any good."
"hm.""would you like one?" i asked as i picked up a cauldron cake.
"sure,"
i tossed one to him, expecting a thanks...or not.
"ehhem?" i prompted.
he looked at me confused, "yes?"
" this is where you say thank you,"
"yeah no." he stated.
i rolled my eyes and took a bite of my cake, trying not to snap at him.
