The carnival preparations were in full swing, and I was scribbling notes on my clipboard to ensure everything was perfect. Bonnie and Elena were helping me, their chatter a constant background noise.

"Katherine looked just like you. It was freaky," Bonnie said to Elena, her voice tinged with unease.

"Well, she is our ancestor," I remarked, turning to my sister. "Did you move the student booth into the cafeteria?"

"Yeah," Elena nodded, her eyes scanning the setup.

I pulled giant stuffed animals from the table, handing them to the worker behind the booth.

"Your guys' vampire ancestor and she didn't just resemble you like a family member would. She looked exactly like Elena," Bonnie continued a hint of disbelief in her tone.

"I don't know, we can't explain it," Elena replied, shaking her head.

"It's creepy," I added, feeling a shiver run down my spine.

"How do you know she's not still out there pretending to be you?" Bonnie asked, her eyes widening with the possibility.

"We don't," Elena admitted, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"Look, we could sit here and go about the what-ifs, or we could get these prizes to the ring toss," I said, trying to steer the conversation back to the task at hand.

Bonnie hesitated before asking, "Have either of you talked to Damon since he killed Jeremy or tried to kill Jeremy?"

I tensed, my grip tightening on the clipboard. The mention of Damon sent a pang through my heart, but I forced myself to focus on the task. "

No, Bonnie, I haven't," Elena answered sharply. "And I won't. I don't want to talk about Damon or anything else vampire-related, okay?"

Bonnie turned to me, her eyes searching. "Selene?"

I handed her a bag full of plush toys. "Can we just make Caroline proud?" I asked, my voice strained.

"You're avoiding the question. I know you felt something for him," Bonnie pressed, her voice gentle but insistent.
