The first thing I noticed when I landed on Earth was how stupidly bright it was, to no one's surprise. Whatever sick feeling I had felt before stepping through returned, and I could barely keep my eyes open to look around.
A hand on my arm guided me to the side and a young boy's voice came from somewhere in front of me.
"Hey, welcome in! You can use a minute to get used to everything, I know the change from the Dark Realm to here is a lot to take in."
I nodded and tried to blink away my confusion. When I squinted up, I saw a fairy wearing dark blue trousers and a black polo top, complete with diamond shaped wings behind him. He smiled as I nodded again.
"When you're ready, go to those tables near the archway to collect your student pack, okay?" He pointed at a long table with two more volunteers holding up small items, explaining them to the some students who had arrived earlier.
Thanking him, I moved slowly to the table, trying not to bump into anyone with my eyes half closed.
I've lived in the Dark Realm my whole life. What was I expecting? Of course it's going to be this sunny!
If my whole high school life was going to be like this, I might just be better off going back home now. When I turned to glance at the portal, I gasped as it had changed; now there were swirls of dark purple and black fighting wildly within the frame. A short fairy stepped out and immediately shielded her face, a face that I recognised.
It's that girl from school... Rue? Or was it- Raven! That was her name, Raven.
I shuddered, hoping none of her 'friends' would follow her. Luckily though, it seems that she came all by herself. The volunteer that welcomed me was now at her side, moving her away from the portal and talking to her.
If she isn't still so worried about being cool with the mean kids this year, I might try to be friends with her again. New school, new chances, right?
With that thought settled, I found myself in front of the table and another young boy handed me a small makeup bag, explaining everything inside.
Here is what was in the bag:
An eye mask to wear when sleeping.
A small packet of tissues.
A tube of cream to protect me from the sun's "you-vee" rays.
A tube of lotion to protect my skin from moisture loss.
Black tinted glasses.
Lastly, a small funny-looking case of lenses for my eyes.
When I was done looking through the bag and had shoved it into my suitcase, he helped me apply the lenses onto my eyes as I blinked out tears. Suddenly, the whole room was so much easier to see - and so much more magnificent than I could have imagined.
The room was circular; gleaming quartz walls with tinted windows spiralled upwards towards a dark dome ceiling. A stunning mural of hands bleeding silver stars was painted on the ceiling, and beneath my feet was a huge gold and silver star reaching out from the centre of the marble floor. It shimmered as I pulled my suitcase away and through the archway.
If I thought the Dark Realm portal room was great, this larger room was grand.
Large golden pots floating along the walls were overflowing with curly vines and flowers in every colour imaginable. In the spaces where there were no windows or flower pots, there were ornate framed portraits of key figures from across the Realms; queens and lords and scientists and speakers. Occasionally breaking this mix of fairies were paintings of classrooms or gardens or other schooling locations.
