Outside, the night air was cool and crisp. The sounds of the city were a distant hum compared to the tension crackling between the two men. Thaddeus squared his shoulders, ready to face whatever Naxle had in store for him.
“What’s this about, Naxle?” Thad demanded, his patience wearing thin.
Naxle’s grin faded, replaced by a look of cold determination. “This is about settling old scores, Thad. You left a lot of unfinished business when you disappeared, and now it’s time to pay up.”
Thad clenched his fists, the memories of past betrayals and conflicts flooding back. “I owe you nothing.”
Naxle chuckled darkly. “You might not think so, but there are others who disagree. People who have been waiting for your return, eager to see you fall.”
Thaddeus felt a pang of doubt. He had made enemies over the years, powerful ones who would relish the chance to take him down. But he couldn’t let fear cloud his judgment. He had come back for a reason, and he wouldn’t be deterred.
“I’m not going anywhere, Naxle. If you have a problem with me, then deal with it now,” Thad said, his voice steady despite the turmoil within.
Naxle took a step closer, his eyes glinting with malice. “Oh, I intend to. But don’t think for a second that this ends here. This is just the beginning, Thaddeus. You’ve walked back into a web of deceit and danger, and you have no idea what’s waiting for you.”
Before Thad could respond, Naxle turned on his heel and walked away, leaving Thaddeus standing alone in the shadows. The weight of Naxle’s words hung heavy in the air, a chilling reminder that his return was fraught with peril.
Thaddeus took a deep breath, the night’s events replaying in his mind. He had anticipated challenges, but the confrontation with Naxle had shaken him more than he cared to admit. He couldn’t afford to show weakness, not now. He had to stay focused, keep his wits about him, and navigate the treacherous path ahead.
As he re-entered the ballroom, the murmurs of the guests faded into the background. His eyes scanned the room, seeking out Aurelle. He found her near the edge of the dance floor, her expression a mix of concern and confusion.
“Thad,” she said softly as he approached, her voice barely above a whisper.
“What’s going on? Why is Naxle here?”Thaddeus looked at her, the woman who had once meant everything to him. The pain of her betrayal still lingered, but he couldn’t let it cloud his judgment. He needed to stay in control.“Don’t worry about Naxle,” Thad replied, his tone firm. “I’ll handle him.”Aurelle’s eyes searched his face, seeking reassurance. “Are you sure? He seemed…”“He’s nothing I can’t handle,” Thaddeus interrupted, his gaze steady. “But I need to know something, Aurelle. Why did you betray me all those years ago?”Aurelle’s breath caught in her throat, the question slicing through the air like a knife.
She looked away, her hands trembling slightly. “Thad, I…”“Just tell me the truth,” Thad urged, his voice gentler now.
“I need to know.”Aurelle took a deep breath, her eyes meeting his once more. “ Oh nevermind it’s for to find out instead”.
“It wasn’t what you think. I had no choice. They… they threatened me, Thad. They said they would destroy everything I cared about if I didn’t do what they wanted.”
Thaddeus felt a surge of anger and protectiveness. He had always suspected there was more to the story, but hearing it from Aurelle herself brought a new level of clarity. “Who were they?”Aurelle shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. “I can’t say. They’re powerful, Thad. More powerful than you can imagine.”
