Sophie tiptoed down the staircase, careful not to make a sound. Her heart felt heavy, but she knew what she had to do. She couldn't let her friends face the dangers of the war without her. It was her mess and she was going to have to deal with it.
Sophie stepped outside the door, closing the door. The darkness of the night seemed to swallow everything around, yet she couldn't bring herself to care. She opened her umbrella and started running, the wind whipping around her.
"Foster!"Keefe's voice echoed through the rain and darkness, causing her to freeze. She turns around slowly to find him standing there, drenched and breathless, staring at her accusingly.
"You weren't supposed to be here," Sophie said, staring at the boy who knew her so well.
"What are you doing?" A determined look came over Keefe. Sophie knew he wouldn't leave unless she's with him.
""Keefe, go back!" she shouted over the roar of the storm. "You need to stay safe!"
"Stay safe? What about you?" he yelled back, taking a step closer. "Why are you doing this? Why are you running away?"
"Because I have to!" she cried, the rain mingling with the tears on her cheeks. "I can't let everyone else risk their lives while I do nothing!"
"You think we want you to do this alone?" Keefe's voice was raw with emotion, his frustration clear in every word. "You think it doesn't kill me to see you put yourself in danger?"
"Why do you care so much?" Sophie demanded, her own anger and fear boiling over. "Why do you always have to be the one to save me?"
"Because I can't stand the thought of losing you!" Keefe shouted, his voice cracking. "Every time you run off, it's like you're ripping my heart out!"
Sophie took a step back, her own heart aching at the pain in his eyes. "I can't stay here, Keefe. I have to do this. For all of us."
"No, Foster, you don't have to do this alone," he pleaded, his hands clenched at his sides. "We can fight together. We can protect each other."
"How can I put you all in danger?" she asked, her voice breaking. "How can I live with myself if something happens to you?"
"And how can I live with myself if something happens to you?" he shot back, his voice desperate. "I can't lose you, Sophie. Not like this."
She shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "I don't know what else to do. Every battle makes us more vulnerable. At this rate, the coming battles will cost innocent lives from my mistakes,"
"Then let us help you," Keefe said, stepping closer. "Let me help you. Please."
"Keefe, Leave me alone!!"
"No."
"Why?? I don't need your protection! Why do you keep trying to protect me?"
"Because I love you!" he burst out, the words tumbling from his lips before he could stop himself. The rain seemed to pause for a heartbeat as they stared at each other, breathless and wide-eyed.
Sophie stood frozen, the weight of Keefe's words hanging in the air between them. She felt a rush of emotions—surprise, confusion, and a flutter of something she hadn't quite allowed herself to acknowledge before. The rain continued to pour, but all she could focus on was Keefe, standing there with his heart on his sleeve.
"Keefe, I..." she stammered, struggling to find the right words. She had always known he cared about her, but not like this.
Keefe's eyes softened, the stormy expression giving way to something gentler, more vulnerable. "Foster... I'm sorry. I shouldn't have just blurted that out. But it's true. I care about you more than anything."
Sophie felt her heart race. She stepped closer, closing the distance between them. "I don't know what's going to happen, Keefe. This war... everything is so uncertain."
He nodded, his gaze never leaving hers. "I know. But no matter what, I want you to know that I'm always with you. Even if it's messy and complicated and scary."
She reached out, her fingers brushing against his cheek. The warmth of his skin was a contrast to the cold rain. "It's not just you," she whispered. "I'm scared too. But... maybe..."
Keefe tilted his head, his breath catching as he realized what she was trying to say. "Maybe what?"
"Maybe I feel the same way," she admitted, her voice barely audible over the rain. "I've just been afraid to say it."
For a moment, they stood there, soaked and shivering, but neither seemed to notice. Keefe slowly leaned in, searching her eyes for any sign of hesitation. When he found none, he closed the distance, capturing her lips in a gentle, tentative kiss.
Sophie felt a jolt of electricity course through her, her eyes fluttering closed as she leaned into him. The kiss was soft and tender, a promise of something more, something that transcended the chaos around them. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as the world seemed to disappear, leaving just the two of them in their own little bubble.
When they finally pulled apart, both were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other. Sophie felt a warmth spread through her chest, a flicker of hope amidst the darkness.
Keefe smiled, a small, relieved smile that made her heart skip a beat. "Please don't go. We'll figure this out, Foster. Together."
She finally agreed, a small smile forming on her lips. "Together."
